Clean protein is something more people are looking into, along with embracing plant-based diets. It’s not much of a surprise anymore since a lot of studies have shown the benefit of eating a plant-based diet. To tell us more about clean protein, I have plant-based diet advocate and book author Kathy Freston as my guest today.
You’d be surprised how Kathy Freston’s diet choices are so different today compared to when she was growing up. Kathy Freston grew up in Georgia, and like any average kid, she loved BBQ ribs, pizza, and burgers.
“It’s funny how you keep evolving as a human being. And then the next right step kind of occurs to you. As I was writing the third book, I added in work, volunteerism, meditation and different aspects of wellness,” recalls Kathy Freston.
She also said that as she was researching and working on things, Kathy Freston realized she didn’t have much awareness at all about food. She, in fact, felt like a hypocrite.
“Because I was encouraging people to wake up and think about aspects of their life that could make them more conscious and more empowered yet I wasn’t doing that in my eating,” said Kathy Freston.
As a result, Kathy Freston challenged herself. She started looking at the repercussions of her food choices, what it did to her body, health, environment, and what its effects on animals.
Kathy Freston says she initially associated protein to animal protein. But because she wanted to know more about how it’s produced, that started her journey.
“I realized the protein I was consuming was harmful to my body. It was also contributing to a lot of environmental problems,” said Kathy Freston. “Included in the problems are soil degradation, cutting down rainforests, creating climate change gases, polluting water, using up a lot of water and animal cruelty.
Aside from that, Kathy Freston’s father died at age 63 due to melanoma and diabetes—diseases which run in the family. Her male cousin, on the other hand, died from breast cancer. That started her drive and obsessed with preventing cancer and diabetes. Lastly, because she’s entirely in love with her dog, the thought of animal slaughter likewise helped motivate Kathy Freston to change her lifestyle.
“All of these things factor into me being a clean protein activist. It’s a health issue, environmental issue, and ethical issue,” said Kathy Freston. “Little by little, I leaned towards becoming this person who no longer consumed animal protein.”
Contrary to what people think, it is possible to get your daily requirement of amino acids from a plant-based diet. Kathy Freston says delicious combinations include beans, rice, corn tortillas, salsa, avocados and salads.
However, Kathy Freston says the most important thing to focus on is finding out what is in the protein you are eating. Some of the questions you can ask yourself are the following:
According to Kathy Freston, just because the food is full of protein, doesn’t mean it’s clean for the body or the planet. So rather than asking where we get our protein, Kathy Freston says we should be more conscious of where we get our fiber.
“Fiber acts like a scrub brush. It pushes the gunk and the toxicity out of your body. It keeps your weight down and belly feeling full. It also slows down the release of glucose,” said Kathy Freston.
So basically, if your protein doesn’t have fiber in it, it’s not cleaning your body. Proteins that are devoid of fiber are also loaded with fat and cholesterol.
Clean protein tends to be plant-based, and the old proteins tend to come from animals. Kathy Freston says studies show the body works harder to digest meat and people who have a plant-based diet are happier and have a much stronger immune system.
“I think it’s been 13 years since I had the flu and the blood labs are doing good. Research shows that as we get into our 60s and 70s, people eating a plant-based diet are likely to have very favorable results,” Kathy Freston said.
If you think a plant-based diet is monotonous, you’re in for a real treat. Kathy Freston attests that experimenting with cooking for friends and family is the fun thing about having a plant-based diet.
For those who want to try, here are Kathy Freston’s typical daily food choices:
Breakfast
“Whey is not a grain. It’s dairy. I like pea protein. It has a smooth taste, easy to digest and low on the glycemic index,” said Kathy Freston. “I also like it sweetened with Stevia. Some prefer soy or rice protein and some like hemp protein, which is okay.”
Lunch
Dinner
Most people think that going on a plant-based diet means you’ll go hungry most of the time. Some are even hesitant; thinking diets are restrictive. On the contrary, Kathy Freston says a plant-based diet can be both filling and delicious.
“I eat really rich hearty food. That’s the fiber that stays in your system and fills your belly. It makes you feel satisfied,” assures Kathy Freston.
I so much agree with Kathy Freston. Do try out this recipe of mine. I have made these recipes for some friends, and they love it!
First, chop beets and saute. Add chopped cabbage, Turkish seasoning, and salt. Put the lid on and cook on low heat. Once done, serve immediately.
Another recipe is cutting some beet greens, mix with two cans of chickpeas, a can coconut milk with curry, turmeric, black pepper, and garlic. Then let it simmer. Let the moisture sit until the sauce thickens. You can also make some quinoa pasta to eat with it. It’s so good; even the kids kept going back for more!
Kathy Freston says she’s a big fan of beans because they have fiber, iron, and antioxidants. Beans are also low on the glycemic index. Plus, they are gluten-free!
“Multiple studies show that beans lower cholesterol, balance blood sugar and promote digestive regularity. They don’t have all the saturated fats, cholesterol, toxins and other harmful ingredients. That’s why I love beans,” said Kathy Freston.
Speaking of vegan protein, I was skeptical at first. However, I changed my mind after interviewing raw vegan athlete Suzanne Mcgee on Episode 41. She has been vegan for years and professional tennis player. Most of her proteins are from pumpkin seeds, and it has not been a detriment to her health.
“Seeds have more protein than nuts. They have more minerals, less saturated fats and high in most amino acids. Some are a good source of omega fatty acids like chia seeds and flax,” Kathy Freston said.
Kathy Freston says you’ll be saving a lot of money when you embrace a plant-based diet. Whole grains and beans are cheap, yet they are full of fiber so you’ll feel full and satisfied.
According to her, these are the staples of the populations around the world. In Mexico and South America, they would eat rice and beans with tortillas and avocados. In China, there’s tofu, vegetables, rice, small fish, or lentil, rice and vegetables in India. These populations are by no means wealthy, and yet they don’t have the disease of the more affluent societies.
“So the true cost of eating animal food is more than what you get at the grocery store. If you think about the annual cost of treating diseases in the U.S., it’s a trillion dollars a year and healthcare,” said Kathy Freston. “Obesity-related healthcare will reach 350 billion by 2018. Heart disease will cost more than 500 billion dollars annually.”
She adds, “Cancer and diabetes are traced to too much animal protein. And they cost nations a lot of tax money.”
In effect, you become less productive. Apparently, Kathy Freston says it’s a lot of government complexity because meat is subsidized.
“They give breaks to animal agriculture companies by giving them cheap grains. And cheap grains make for cheap meat,” said Kathy Freston. “Cheap meat, eggs, and cheese are fed to our kids, so these artificially low prices hurt our health in the long term.”
It’s not going to be easy but Kathy Freston assures changing to a plant-based diet is worth it. Bottomline, it’s all about knowing what you eat.
For example, Kathy Freston says one egg roughly has 3 grams of protein. And that’s not a ton of protein compared to one cup of lentils which has 18 grams proteins. Plus, the cholesterol from one egg is more than what you should get. That is why in the spirit of being ethical, it is right to give up eggs.
Kathy Freston also says that part of the process is to keep moving forward. And be open to alternative food choices.
“Beano is a good brand of digestive enzymes. It helps to digest beans and all the delicious plant-based foods. All the fiber going through your system gets the toxicity out of your body,” Kathy Freston said.
Kathy Freston says traveling is not a problem since more restaurants now have plant-based menus. Some even bring their food like seeds.
She also suggests using the Happy Cow app for a list of good places to eat. Mexican food is always a safe choice.
Kathy Freston has a great compilation of clean protein recipes in her Clean Protein book. There are recipes using black-eyed peas, stews, and even lentil waffles!
There are also contributions from celebrity chefs like recipes for sloppy joes, tofu chorizo and spicy smashed lemon chickpeas which is Kathy Freston’s favorite.
Kathy Freston’s boyfriend happens to be Dan Beuttner, the New York Times bestselling author of Blue Zones. Apparently, he discovered five places in the world—the Blue Zones, where the healthiest people live and have long lives.
“He influences me all the time. The Blue Zones include Sardinia in Italy, Loma Linda in California, Okinawa in Japan and Costa Rica. A common thread is that they eat a largely plant-based diet,” said Kathy Freston.
Kathy Freston has several books that are excellent references on eating healthy. Clean Protein addresses all the protein issues. The Lean, on the other hand, is her second favorite book which provides you with a 30-day meal plan.
There’s also the Book of Veganish, which is not a book about being vegan. Kathy Freston says it is a book about determining what kind of protein is suitable for you, for your values, for your health, and for the planet. So check it out!
Kathy Freston believes that clean eating (and clean proteins, in particular!) is not only good for individual health and wellness but is also much better for the planet as a whole. She has become an activist and advocate for eating this way.
She says it’s funny how you find your passion and then your passion leads you to your life’s purpose. Kathy Freston now writes books and does media appearances. She shares in whatever way she can so that other people also feel empowered to eat for their health and overall well-being.

Menstrual Cycle

Menstrual cycle and how to balance our hormones is something every woman should know. Studies show that balanced hormones are also connected to our mental health and longevity. So my guest today, Nicole Jardim will teach us exactly how to take care of ourselves especially during our menstrual cycle.
Nicole Jardim says she had a great childhood. But when she was 11 years old, her dad suddenly passed away. It turned her world upside down.
Around 14 or 15 years old, Nicole Jardim had no idea why she suddenly developed significant period problems. Her mom experienced the same thing until her 20s, so she didn’t think her menstrual cycle was amiss.
Nicole Jardim recalls that one of her major menstrual problems was having heavy periods. Then suddenly her menstrual cycle would halt and come only every three to four months. She continued this way for the next four years during her teenage years.
There were times that it would give her terrible cramps and unable to go to school. Finally, at around 18 years old, she decided to go to an ob-gyn doctor to discuss her menstrual cycle problem. That doctor recommended that Nicole Jardim start taking birth control pills because that was the solution in conventional medicine.
Upon taking birth control pills, the menstrual pain subsided and Nicole Jardim’s periods only lasted around two days. Gone are the days of heavy menstrual periods.
But Nicole Jardim’s hormones swung from one end of the spectrum to the other. It turned out she was estrogen-dominant and had low levels of sex hormones. It was like at pre-menopausal level by the time Nicole Jardim went off the pill in her early 20s.
“By that time, I was having serious health problems. I had serious gut issues, and my hair was falling. Then I had melasma all over my face and experienced UTIs and yeast infections,” recalls Nicole Jardim.
Because of her numerous health issues, Nicole Jardim ended up seeing an acupuncturist. After an initial consultation, the acupuncturist told her that the birth control pills caused all her menstrual cycle problems.
Eventually, she got off the pill, and her health did improve. Nicole Jardim finally realized she wanted to learn more about women’s health and understand more about the female body.
During her period of research, Nicole Jardim discovered the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). However, they were only doing live courses in New York City at the time. And with Nicole Jardim living in Florida, it initially seemed impossible for her to enroll.
After meeting a friend who was a graduate of IIN and teaching Holistic Nutrition, Nicole Jardim finally decided to move to New York City to go to the school. Luckily, he husband was supportive of her decision. Hence, Nicole Jardim attended her first class in 2010.
Later on, after her apprenticeship, Nicole Jardim realized that she genuinely wanted to pursue a career in women’s health. It became a life mission for her to help women cope with their health issues, especially about menstrual periods.
“One thing I learned is how food is connected to our hormones and our period,” said Nicole Jardim.
Apparently, there is so much to learn about food and nutrition. I’ve had a few medical doctors on the show who said they pay so much for their education, such that they are made to think they are taught everything there is to know about healing, health, and nutrition.
And in over eight years of education, they only have one class on nutrition. Hence, they think that is all they need to know about the subject.
Nicole Jardim thinks that one of the most significant problems of women is they are right now under an unprecedented amount of physical, emotional, psychological stress. Apparently, we’re at a breaking point already. So we have to figure out some way to live in the world as it is right now.
“When we’re in the state of chronic overstimulation, what happens is, our brains are being hijacked. And what that looks like is we have issues like blood sugar roller coaster, food sensitivity or gut inflammation,” said Nicole Jardim. “We end up in this chronic state of fight or flight. Our bodies are constantly in the alarm mode.”
When it comes to having hormones that are regulated or imbalanced, Nicole Jardim thinks that you have first to figure out the root cause. One way is looking into the food you are eating. You also have to figure out your chronic overstimulation.
“There’s a lot of different factors that you have to address before jumping into a hormone replacement therapy,” said Nicole Jardim.
Some of you may have heard of Dr. John Lee. He was the pioneer of bioidentical progesterone. His work is outstanding. Regarding bone density, he was able to reverse osteoporosis with bioidentical progesterone. Unfortunately, he already passed away from a heart attack in 2003.
Nicole Jardim has earned a lot of praise from clients who have all benefited from her programs to improve their reproductive health and fixed their hormone issues. Some women suffering from infertility and PCOS have identified the root cause of their health problem after signing up for Nicole Jardim’s Fix Your Period Course.
“Every woman who comes to me doesn’t have a clue about what is going on with her body. She doesn’t understand what ovulation is or why she gets her period and so many other things,” reveals Nicole Jardim. “It’s a serious problem. So I first have women understand their bodies and the phases of their menstrual cycle.”
I know you’ve heard it again and again. Diet makes a big difference in improving health. Nicole Jardim says it can be overwhelming, but the secret is to take baby steps towards changing your diet.
“Think about all the green vegetables in the world, and choose a few of them that you love. And start to have that every day of your diet,” advises Nicole Jardim. “So many women did that and had amazing changes.”
These vegetables are critical to women’s health because they contain compounds that help reduce estrogen dominance. They help your body produce estrogen better. Nicole Jardim says two to three cups of vegetables a day is an ideal amount. Some vegetables include kale, brussel sprouts, cabbage, and broccoli, etc.
Nicole Jardim also advises watching our fat intakes and consume coconut oil, coconut butter, animal proteins, fatty fish, nuts, and seeds. Consequently, Nicole Jardim says when we’re not giving out body enough nutrients, we will be unable to ovulate consistently.
Do try out Nicole Jardim’s recipe for pumpkin seeds and flax. Take one tablespoon of each, put it into a smoothie, salad, soup or breakfast food. You can also grind up the seeds before ingesting it. You can also use sunflower seeds.
Nicole Jardim also suggests creating a routine at night by limiting phone use and watching TV. It is also advisable to restrict the use of the computer. Using essential oils also helps.
“What you need to be doing is winding down and optimize our sleep. That will drastically change how we function and how resilient we are to stresses in our life,” Nicole Jardim said.
Nicole Jardim is a Certified Women’s Health + Functional Nutrition Coach with a specialty in hormonal and reproductive health. In 2010, she trained at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a health coach.
Shortly after that, Nicole Jardim completed a 3-month apprenticeship at a women’s holistic health center in New York City. She then did a 1-year training program with Dr. Sara Gottfried, MD (author of The Hormone Cure & The Hormone Reset Diet).
Nicole Jardim followed that up with an additional 1-year women’s health and nutrition coaching certification program with the Integrative Women’s Health Institute. In 2016, she completed a 1-year training program with the Kresser Institute for Functional and Evolutionary Medicine. And finally, she is pursuing her national certification to become a licensed health coach.

Vaccine dangers have been rising in recent years. More and more parents are now wary of having their child vaccinated. My guest today, April Boden is a mother of a vaccine-injured child and has another child who developed autism because of vaccines. In this episode, she narrates her journey as well as the benefits of homeschooling her children.

April Boden turned into an anti-vaccine advocate due to her personal experience. Starting with her oldest son who was sickly when he was younger, April Boden first shared her apprehensions over vaccines to her doctor.
April Boden brought up the information she heard that vaccines, mainly MMR could cause autism. However, her doctor said there was no truth to that rumor, and so April Boden proceeded in having her oldest son vaccinated on schedule.
It turns out that her oldest son became sickly because of vaccines and even had to have gallbladder surgery when he was seven months old. His chronic sickness was the reason why April Boden decided not to continue with the rest of his vaccine shots.
April Boden’s second son Aydan was born two years after. Initially a healthy baby, he was already walking at ten months old. He already started talking at a year old, but that was eventually erased after he was given vaccine shots.
At a little over a year old, Aydan was given MMR, phemmoccocl and chicken pox vaccine all on the same day. It was also the day when Aydan stopped talking. Truly a parents’ worse nightmare.
April Boden recalls that they started to see a change in Aydan right away. He got sick, got a high fever for several days and began to act differently after he came out of his sickness. Then he started walking on his toes and had erratic language.
“Previously, he had just been starting to talk, so the next time we went to the doctor, I voiced my concerns,” recalls April Boden. “However, the doctor said Aydan was well within the normal range, so she went ahead and gave him his vaccines that day. And that was it. Boom. The language was gone.”
Aydan started to have gut and diarrhea issues and was having a hard time sleeping at night shortly after getting his vaccine shots. Unfortunately, April Boden said that Aydan’s doctor merely shrugged it off as going through a phase.
Half a year later, people close to the family started voicing out their concerns over Aydan’s development. Going back to the same doctor for a consultation, that’s when Aydan was suspected by the doctor to have autism. That doctor, however, just evaded the question of whether vaccines indeed caused Aydan’s autism.
April Boden was advised by Aydan’s doctor to sign up at the Regional Center run by the State of California. They have psychologists and programs for early intervention therapies for people. Apparently, going through a treatment with a private doctor prolongs medical treatment due to insurance issues.
“He was about two and a half at the time. When we started the early intervention, he had quite a few hours of intensive therapy. Then he started to regain his language. And we were excited to see some of the improvements,” said April Boden.
However, California law states that once a child turns three years old, the Regional Center turns over the bulk of the intervention therapy to the school district. That gave April Boden a new reason to worry about since she was not sure if Aydan was ready to go to school.
“The school assessed him and said he was ready. However, part of the requirement was that they needed Aydan to be vaccinated. So we went ahead despite my reluctance. We did it, and all the stuff that we regained in therapy was gone,” April Boden said.
When Aydan started school, April Boden said her child started displaying unusual behavior. Such as banging his head, getting aggressive and biting is own arm. At this point, April Boden decided that enough is enough.
“So at this point, I said no more Jedi mindset. This is a vaccine injury and started asking the doctor to help me, like running some allergy tests,” said April Boden. “Shortly after, we got a notice that the doctor dropped our insurance and he could no longer see us as a patient.”
Worse of all, when April Boden tried to get copies of Aydan’s medical records, the doctor’s office claimed that the documents were sent to archives. Going to the record archives, that’s when April Boden was told that her son’s medical records were all gone. Not even a court subpoena fazed the doctor to explain where the files went.
April Boden said her next step was to turn to DAN! to seek assistance for Aydan’s treatment. DAN! stands for Defeat Autism Now!, and was created by the Autism Research Institute (ARI) in 1995. Dr. Bernard Rimland established the Autism Research Institute in 1967.
Aydan was given supplementation and was put on a restrictive diet right away. Part of the diet was taking away gluten and dairy products.
“It’s an ongoing thing and a lot easier if you research beforehand and make a sound decision on vaccines than try to undo the damage that’s been done,” said April Boden.
On the other hand, April Boden’s daughter is three years old and has never been vaccinated. According to April Boden, there is a significant difference between her daughter and her two vaccinated sons.
“She doesn’t have allergies. After all the research I’ve done over the last ten years on vaccines, I would say that is quite possible that there is a connection,” said April Boden. “It was a good year when my oldest son did not have additional vaccine shots. It probably saved him from getting worse.”
Another thing that April Boden noticed was that her daughter doesn’t have dark circles under her eyes while both of her sons do. Overall, April Boden describes her daughter as a very happy and very typical child.
April Boden says for her daughter, she just makes sure to wash her hands often and eats a healthy diet. They also try to live in a toxic-free environment.
She says her daughter so far hasn’t been sick. Although she had cold sores one time, April Boden was able to cure it with natural remedies.
“Her immune system is doing everything that it’s supposed to do and I breastfed her for three years,” said April Boden.
For those who have autistic kids, April Boden suggests looking into their diet. Results of diets vary, and although it is not a cure for autism, it makes the kids feel better all around.
She also says the best thing to do is have a diet that is something the family can stick to as a whole. This way, having foods that an autistic child is not allowed to eat can be avoided.
April Boden also suggests giving the child probiotics and fermented foods like sauerkraut. Giving them supplements also helps. Not everything is going to work, and it’s best to take it one step at a time.
April Boden says another solution is to spend time together with your autistic child. Aydan is currently under the Son-Rise Program which helps families cope with an autistic member of the family.
Under the program, unique methods are used to treat children and adults who are diagnosed within the autistic spectrum. These include autism spectrum disorders, pervasive developmental disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome, etc.
Probiotics can be expensive, so April Boden started making homemade yogurt. The yogurt that she makes at home is the only dairy that Aydan is allowed to have. Apparently, if you ferment cow dairy for 24 hours, you could ferment off most of the lactose.
Since then, she noticed Aydan’s gut health improved significantly. He was also getting less sickly and fewer migraines and headaches. This made Aydan calmer and considerably less hyperactive.
I do a coconut milk yogurt, and I do a 12 to 18-hour ferment. I learned this from a past guest of mine. Take a good brand of probiotics, crack open five capsules. Then instead of using the yogurt starter, just use the probiotics.
April Boden says homeschooling her kids is the best decision she made. All three children are exposed a lot outside the house so training them to be sociable is not a problem.
It’s beneficial to the family as a whole. Because they can work around her husband’s schedule and spend time together as a family.
“Homeschooling can reduce the stress on the family and the child. Because some of the kids are overstimulated by the school environment. It’s a lot of input for them to regulate themselves all day long. It’s not conducive to their learning,” said April Boden.
Aydan in particular, receives one-on-one homeschooling therapies in the house, 14 hours a week and spread over four days. They go to the clinic for more treatment three times a week.
Furthermore, a high school volunteer comes by the house once a week to play with Aydan for an hour. April Boden also spends extra homeschooling time alone with Aydan every night to practice things like writing.
Before we had a child, we came across the Trivium Education. It is an education system that teaches kids how to do critical thinking. Kids as young as seven years old can be on the program.
Apparently, there was an entire homeschool community attached to the program. It also led to the non-vaccine community. Hence I got more interested in what the Trivium was all about. It made homeschooling easier.
April Boden strongly recommends this book by Susan Bauer called The Well-Trained Mind. She says signing up with the HSLDA organization also helps a lot.
HSLDA stands for Home School Legal Defense Association. It is a non-profit organization established to help parents fight for their rights as far as education for their children is concerned. They also give homeschooling-related legal advice.
April Boden also has a blog called Aydan’s Recovery. It chronicles Aydan’s journey as well as all the research April Boden has done over the years. She also has a fantastic podcast called Truther Talk which is worth listening to.
We have to take steps to protect ourselves. I’m very interested in homeoprophylaxis, so I’m currently doing that with my family through Cilla Whatcott who was my podcast guest twice. The idea is that you can create immunity using homeopathy. It has 90% success rate and no adverse effects.
I also had Dr. Stephanie Seneff on the show who talked about the connection between vaccines and autism. On episode 89, she shared all the reasons why the MMR vaccine is causing autism so do check out that episode.
April Boden is an author, wife and homeschooling mother of three children. She started writing about her son, Aydan’s vaccine injury in 2009. Since then she has appeared on several radio talk shows podcast and the docu-series The truth about vaccines with Ty Bollinger.

Mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, OCD, and panic attacks are usually treated with medication in the world of conventional medicine. But with more people becoming aware of the consequences of taking drugs, many are turning towards ways to heal mental illness naturally. My guest today, Kathryn Keefer will share her tips in healing mental illness naturally after overcoming her own health obstacles.
Kathryn Keefer shares that her childhood was messy. However, she readily tells people her story. Because it shows people that it is possible not to become a victim of your circumstances.
Kathryn Keefer is an identical twin. Along with a younger sister, they initially grew up in Virginia. She recalls spending a lot of time outdoors.
Life was good until her dad, who was in the Navy, left the family when Kathryn Keefer was seven years old. The family eventually decided to move to a house that was more manageable to maintain because their old place was too big for a single mother.
Both her parents eventually remarried. However, both divorced their second spouses after a few years.
As a child caught in the chaos of a broken family, Kathryn Keefer turned to food for comfort. She and her twin sister Rachel were both were hooked on video games.
“Rachel turned to food just a little bit later. She was that classic middle child by trying to keep everyone together. My little sister and I were like cats and dogs,” Kathryn Keefer recalls. “Rachel took on the Mama Bear role. Her rebellious stage was in college.”
Kathryn Keefer also remembers having her first panic attack in the 8th grade. She was labeled with mental illness such as depression, anxiety, and OCD. That is why Kathryn Keefer was automatically put on Prozac.
Kathryn Keefer was 16 years old when her mom divorced her stepdad. She went to beauty school after high school and eventually got married after graduation. Then she got pregnant right away. Now with a new label as a mother, Kathryn Keefer eventually became depressed.
After moving to Hawaii, Kathryn Keefer found out she was pregnant again, and the depression became worse. One day, it got so bad that she told herself that she could not keep being depressed.
“I was tired, and I was tired of being tired. Then I discovered the self-help world. Fast forward today, that is where it all started,” said Kathryn Keefer.
She adds, “I became obsessed with not getting fat. Because I was obsessed with my weight for so long and it consumed everything I did. So I was not healthy at all. I got relatively thin the unhealthy way.”
Eventually, Kathryn Keefer discovered that she was not a victim of the labels that other people were giving. Everything changed for the better the day Kathryn Keefer realized that she doesn’t have to listen to other people,
Kathryn Keefer says that not being defined by labels helped her realize what she needed. She is an advocate for natural heal and says that there are safe ways to get off medication. In her case, she practiced self-awareness and changing how she ate.
“Develop a love for real food. You don’t have to change your life overnight. It’s about the small goals that are easy to reach,” explains Kathryn Keefer. “So you can celebrate those victories. Slowly pile on another one until you realize one day that you haven’t consumed processed food or soda.”
It is a beach body program that features full body movements and stretching. Kathryn Keefer taught classes for two years in North Carolina.
It was not an overnight success for Kathryn Keefer as far as her exercise regimen is concerned. In fact, it was only three years ago that she finally really got into exercising.
“Instead of saying, ‘I work out because I’m scared of getting fat,’ I workout because I love myself. You learn to love yourself,” Kathryn Keefer advises. “Find that sweet spot where your heart is just pumping, and you feel incredible. That is your brain releasing dopamine. It brings your heart rate up.”
Kathryn Keefer is also a fitness instructor. It’s quite amusing since she says she didn’t start exercising until she was 25 years old.
According to Kathryn Keefer, people have a hard time finding the motivation to workout. But she discovered that is not about finding the motivation to start. It is about learning how amazing it is to finish and becoming not addicted to that feeling.
Kathryn Keefer believes that most Americans’ sedentary lifestyle was due to having a poor diet. According to her, it plays a significant role in why 1 in 3 Americans is on anti-depressants.
“The best form of eating that they discovered for people with mental illness problems is the Paleo diet. I’m not Paleo because my body does not digest meat very well. It’s just an example that we are all different and it is about finding what works best for you,” said Kathryn Keefer.
Kathryn Keefer also says that the brain is made of fat. That is why good fats are so vital. She eats an avocado a day and cooks only with unrefined coconut oil and ghee.
“Olive oil alone is good, but if you cook olive oil, it oxidizes. So it is not good for cells at all. I also recommend taking Vitamin D supplements, avoid gluten and dairy products,” advised Kathryn Keefer.
Kathryn Keefer says this is because gluten is just a protein that makes food stretchy. There are still other amazing choices for food and carbs. Gluten and dairy products, on the other hand, contain elements that are detrimental to the brain because they are inflammatory foods.
I have a fantastic pasta recipe that my family loves, and I know you will, too! Red lentil noodles are made with red lentil flour and can be bought at Trader Joes or any whole foods store. It saves time because you can cook it in batches.
Packed with protein, I mix a little salt, ghee, organic tomato sauce with the noodles. It’s like mac and cheese with ketchup. It’s effortless to make and healthy, too! You won’t feel like you’re on a diet because it tastes so good.
According to Kathryn Keefer, depriving ourselves is the reason why so many diets fail. Consequently, there are fun ways to make healthy food taste good. Kathryn Keefer does a chickpea recipe made with almond butter. Mixed with garbanzo beans and vanilla, it is a blender recipe that is likewise easy to make.
Another one of my favorite recipes is flourless bread. The seed bread is so fibrous because quinoa binds it together. Just soak the quinoa till it’s thick like dough and then mix all the seeds in it and bake it.
Once it is baked, cut like long crackers and eat it like a toast. It’s actually like a mix of bread and crackers. Sometimes I put dried fruit in it and melted ghee. Just make sure you drink a lot of water whenever you eat this.
Kathryn Keefer, on the other hand, uses beans a lot and her preferred flour is almond. She has also cut back on coffee. Also, try her delicious smoothie!
To make Kathryn Keefer’s smoothie, blend carrots, fresh ginger and frozen fruits like mangoes, pineapple or peach. Then mix it with frozen banana, turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, lemon juice and a few drops of stevia.
Kathryn Keefer also recommends drinking lemon water out of a stainless or glass bottle first thing in the morning. It keeps the vitamin C levels up and aids in digestion. And because cancer cells do not survive in an alkaline environment, drinking lemon water also prevents cancer.
Aside from food and exercise, another thing that helped Kathryn Keefer heal her mental illness is doing meditation, tapping or emotional freedom technique (EFT), and breathing work.
Kathryn Keefer learned about tapping from Nick Ortner who is the author of The Tapping Solution For Manifesting Your Greatest Self Tapping is applying acupressure to the body.
“There’s a nerve that runs right along your stomach and diaphragm. So when you deep belly breathes with your diaphragm, it massages that nerve and calms your nervous system down,” explains Kathryn Keefer.
On episode 103 of my podcast, I incidentally guested award-winning author Dawson Church, who also expounded on tapping or emotional freedom technique. In the episode, he also mentioned that EFT is also often used for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder.
Another key to getting yourself out of depression is finding ways to be aware. When one is aware of things, the feeling of gratitude envelopes our whole being and leads to happiness.
Check out my episodes 54 and 166 where Michael Weinberger expounded on The Happiness Formula. He’s such an inspiration for overcoming his depression and helping people to find happiness by embracing gratitude.
Kathryn Keefer also recommends getting enough sleep. Keeping communication lines open with others can also do wonders to improve mental illness. Most of all, she stresses the importance of self-care.
“By taking care of yourself, you are in a place mentally and physically to help other people, especially with family. It’s ok to be selfish because it makes you a better parent. You have needs, and they have to be met,” said Kathryn Keefer.

I first heard of Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt from my Naturopathic physician. Apparently, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt not only specializes in heavy metals detox. He is also known internationally to reverse autism, treat Lyme disease, certain types of cancer, autoimmune conditions and managing pain.
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt shares that he grew up in Berlin, Germany, and then moved to a town south of Germany when he was older. It was in Freiburg, Germany where he decided to pursue medical studies.
During his last two years of medical school, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt was in an experimental course that included acupuncture and homeopathy. Around five to six years later, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt ended up in the United States where he explored alternative medicine.
He liked Natural Medicine so much that he remembers going to a lot of chiropractic seminars among other things. Today, he has 30 years of Holistic healing experience and even developed things like pain management and treating heavy metals through a heavy metals detox.
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt has an excellent knowledge of how the autonomic nervous system works and how we can use reflexes better. This led him to develop his methods of testing which he called Autonomic Response Testing.
Through this method, changes in muscle tone are used to indicate and gauge the body’s overall health. In fact, it was proven to be very useful in diagnosing the health condition of patients all over the world.
However, not just any health practitioner can administer this testing. According to Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, one must first complete three levels of certification and pass a written and practical exam.
“The Autonomic Response Testing allows me to look deeper into people and know what makes them sick. Solutions come when you know the causes,” said Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt.
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt has been studying the decline of the human condition for decades. Together with his team, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt found out that environmental toxicity is indeed very possible. As a result, our body has become the driving force of toxic illness.
“Everybody now has some level of chronic illness. It is getting worse every year. Based on my experience, the main cause of chronic illness is cardiovascular disease,” Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt reveals. “Although that decreased over the last few years because people learned that smoking is bad.”
He adds, “Then it was taken over by cancer. But now both cardiovascular disease and cancer have been taken over by neurological disease. And the death rate is still rising due to the presence of heavy metals in the brain.”
Now, what then is the most dangerous heavy metal? According to Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, the main danger comes from aluminum. What is more alarming is the fact that aluminum is in most vaccines, food, and drinking water. Apparently, it is also in the air! That’s why doing a heavy metals detox is essential.
“Other things like glyphosate in our food chain is also something to watch out for. It is the primary herbicide used in the United States. And the U.S. by far has the highest use of glyphosate,” warns Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt.
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt explains that glyphosate is a chelating agent. It binds all the trace minerals in the food. However, if it binds to aluminum, it eventually transports into the bloodstream and goes straight to the brain.
Why is it a cause for alarm? Well, for one thing, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt says it decreases the minerals that we need. And it puts toxic elements into the spaces where the good minerals should be. Furthermore, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt revealed that aluminum apparently also is the primary cause of Alzheimer’s disease.
“In the U.S., when you eat organic food, it has 80% of the same amount of glyphosate as commercially grown food. So no matter how good you try to eat, you can’t protect yourself unless you know what to do,” said Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt. “Eating organic food is 20% less toxic, and it’s still a good number. But ideally, you want 90% clean food.”
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt says that other heavy metals to avoid are cadmium, nickel, mercury, and lead. We should likewise be careful in choosing cosmetics and medication because most of the products contain titanium, which is also harmful.
Apart from heavy metals, we should also avoid an environment that has a massive amount of electromagnetic radiation. This means, even in our own home, we should regulate the use of wi-fi.
“We are born with a functional detox system. And wi-fi disables many of the detox enzymes. It’s like a perfect storm,” said Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt.
Aside from aluminum, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt says that mercury toxicity is also something to watch out for. He also explains that many pathogens have an advantage. Apparently, pathogens can live in heavy metal contaminated body compartments where the cells of our immune system become completely dysfunctional.
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt likewise revealed that he did a study wherein he found out wherever there is high levels of mercury in the air, the higher rate of autism. Hence, mercury exposure in the air is indeed dangerous, especially for pregnant mothers.
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt also suggests getting rid of wi-fi routers in the house. He says a pregnant woman does not belong in a wi-fi home. This is because the transfer of toxins and infections happens in pregnancy through the placenta.
“The rate of autism doubles every five years. It is strongly linked to metal toxicity and the electromagnetic environment. So pregnant women should be careful,” said Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt. “I teach autism prevention and treatment in Europe. In fact, I have a seminar coming up this February.”
The Klinghardt Academy has a wealth of information on all of Dr. Klinghardt’s work. The site has seminar schedules, articles, protocols and recommended products and tools for different health conditions.
As for success stories, Dr. Dietrich is proud to share that he and his team has had a lot of success with patients and treating children with autism in particular. He proudly reveals that many of the kids are now doing well in universities.
Doing a heavy metals detox is not hard. First of all, for pregnant women, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt advises the intake of high doses of chlorella. Chlorella is an alga that completely binds a huge amount of toxic materials.
“If the mother takes chlorella during lactation, it extracts most toxins from the breastmilk. As soon babies are old enough to eat, they can also be given chlorella,” said Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt. “For pregnant women, the recommended daily dosage is ten tablets three times a day. Take it with a meal or before a meal.”
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt also clarifies that it is better to start with a high dose rather than a low dose. This is because a small dose triggers a release of toxins that apparently, do not bind enough. Hence, you can end up feeling a lot worse.
Getting our hair analyzed for heavy metals is likewise an effective method to determine heavy metals toxicity. The same goes for chelation therapy, although Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt was quick to say chelation therapy has its ups and downs. This is because it removes the beneficial minerals from the body apart from the heavy metals.
It takes time to do a heavy metals detox. However, doing it the natural way is indeed very possible. Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt also agrees that garlic, cumin, melatonin, and cilantro are particularly effective in extracting mercury out of our brain.
For those who love saunas, this is good news. Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt strongly recommends doing a daily sauna. However, he advises people to take only five minutes in the sauna and immediately take a cold shower for detox. This is to avoid being overexposed to electromagnetic radiation in some saunas.
“Coffee enema is also good. Especially for carbon-based toxins, but not so much for heavy metals. However, any form of enema therapy has some place in good therapy. And coffee enemas are probably #1. I recommend people do it once a week,” said Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt.

Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt studied medicine & psychology in Freiburg, Germany, completing his Ph.D. on the involvement of the autonomic nervous system in autoimmune disorders. Early in his career, he became interested in the sequelae of chronic toxicity (especially lead, mercury, environmental pollutants & electromagnetic fields) for the course of illness.
While working in India, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt encountered Eastern concepts of disease etiology & blended them with his Western training. This laid the foundation for his 5-level system of Integrative Medicine. In the U.S., he spent three years as a full-time emergency physician before becoming Medical Director of the Santa Fe Pain Centre.
Increasingly aware of the limitations of conventional medicine when dealing with chronic conditions, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt trained in Ericksonian hypnotherapy and began to include body-oriented psychotherapeutic & counseling approaches in his work, along with neural therapy, mesotherapy injection techniques & applied psychoneurobiology.
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt has contributed significantly to the understanding of metal toxicity & its connection with chronic infections, illness & pain. Doulas have been around for a long time. Derived from the Greek term, “servant woman,” more pregnant women opt to have birth doulas during labor to avoid undergoing a cesarean section. I had a great birthing experience with a doula, too. So I’m thrilled to have Kate Dewey on the show today who can expound on her role during birthing.
Kate Dewey says her interest in birthing started in childhood when she first watched the movie, “Look Who’s Talking.” She realized that she loved the idea of birth.
And because her grandmother was a nurse, it further influenced Kate Dewey’s yearning to become a mom someday. That dream of having kids and being a certified doula turned into a reality years later.
Kate Dewey shares that she particularly became interested in becoming a doula after she gave birth to her daughter in 2006. Her personal experience in childbirth inspired her to help women give birth naturally.
However, it was not until 2008 when she gave birth to her second child that she trained with DONA International. It was a blessing that she underwent training because her second delivery was everything she envisioned it would be.
The need for a doula indeed arose out of the huge cultural shift that’s taken place over the last 50 years. When I gave birth, my doula played a significant role in ensuring that the delivery of my baby was as smooth as possible. However, many women still confuse doulas and midwives.
First of all, midwives are capable of assisting decision-making aspects. These can be anything from medical exams and whether or not a woman needs anesthesia. In most cases, midwives usually have adequate training in clinical nursing training.
Doulas on the other hand, primarily provide emotional and physical support. They also help new mothers and their family time to adjust taking care of the new baby.
“As a birth doula, I support women and families as they give birth to their babies. That can mean different things,” said Kate Dewey. “We are present for the home birth and birthing centers. And we help women in delivery by giving physical and emotional support.”
Apparently, more hospitals are recognizing the need for doulas apart from midwives. Kate Dewey explains that in the hospital, doulas complement the birth team because they’re not a medical care provider. Nor are they equipped to deliver a baby or give medical advice.
Essentially, doulas help mothers understand what birthing options are available. Part of their job is also to make sure that the labor continues to progress. Kate Dewey also explains that there is also a particular technique to help new mothers cope with pain.
“We can decrease the overall cesarean rate by 50%. And we can shorten the length of labor by almost 25%. There is also a lower epidural request by 50%,” reveals Kate Dewey.
Furthermore, hiring a doula significantly increases the success rate of breastfeeding and lower blood pressure during labor. Overall, having them around substantially contributes to happy childbirth.
Before hiring, it is essential that you are comfortable with your birthing team. Kate Dewey says that she and her partner KC Johnston, have had ample training and adequate experience to ensure that your pre-delivery and postpartum goes as smooth as possible.
According to Kate Dewey, their $1,500 birth package includes prenatal visits and full support every step of the way. Most of their clients truly appreciate the extra help in taking care of the new baby.
“The midwife primarily focuses on the safety of the mom and baby. Their job is easier if there is a doula. We’re often at the birth before the midwife,” said Kate Dewey. “Women who are birthing need loving support and informational support. The loving support comes from their partners.”
Seeing the clamor for women who wish to know more about childbirth, Kate Dewey started teaching classes in 2010. She says being able to educate lots of women over the years has been truly fulfilling.
Years later, Kate Dewey added another feather to her cap. She became a certified Doula Trainer after undergoing training at the Birth Arts International in 2015.
“This work is emotionally very challenging. You’re walking into somebody’s birth. And you have to be intensely aware of how important that day is for them,” said Kate Dewey. “Plus, you have to focus all your energy on the client during their darkest hour of need.”
Kate Dewey explains that while their training is primarily done in person, there are also online training classes. The online training is self-paced. Ideally, it takes six to eight months to complete the course. There is also a requirement of attending a minimum of five births before one can be certified.
For those who are interested in childbirth and doula training, Kate Dewey’s website is an excellent resource to get all of that information. They likewise provide other services like massage therapy and placenta encapsulation.

“If you’re listening to this and you’re getting ready to have a baby, and you’re scared, find a doula and educate yourself,” advises Kate Dewey. “Make sure that what’s going to happen to your body is normal.”
She adds,”My job exists to be a voice of confidence and fear elimination in a world where people get pregnant and don’t know what comes next.”
Kate Dewey is a Birth Doula, Childbirth Educator, Birth Arts International Doula Trainer. She became interested in Doula work after the hospital birth of her daughter in 2006.
She is also trained with DONA as a birth and postpartum doula in the summer of 2008 while she was pregnant with her second child and preparing for her birth. In 2010, she decided to continue her work in the field of birth as a Childbirth Educator. She now teaches classes in Mountlake Terrace.
In 2011, Kate Dewey completed her DONA certification and also began to work as a placenta encapsulation specialist. While it is not something she does anymore, she believes in the power of placenta medicine and recognizes the placenta as a powerful source of spiritual energy as well as nourishment for the birthing person postpartum.
In 2015, Kate studied with the holistic organization, Birth Arts International. She completed Doula certification and immediately began the work to become a Doula Trainer. She has since taught Doula workshops in the US and Uganda, training new birth workers.

Motivation is either the driving force or obstacle to achieving goals. Now that we’re a couple of weeks into the new year, I am so thrilled to have life coach Bryan Falchuk as my guest for today’s episode. His life journey is so incredible and perfect to illustrate what we can achieve with the right motivation.
They say success stories start from failures. I believe there is truth to that and Bryan Falchuk’s life story is a prime example. When he was just a toddler, his parents’ marriage fell apart. Broken homes indeed can have adverse effects on children, especially toddlers.
Consequently, Bryan Falchuk gained weight because he was unhappy. Aggravating the situation was the fact that he also struggled with depression and anxiety. Fast forward years later, he apparently had the motivation to do something about his weight and succeeded.
Bryan Falchuk recalls that 2011 was the year that everything changed. He had a tough time because his wife suddenly became very ill and he had a two-year-old son to raise.
Initially, Bryan Falchuk thought his wife just had the flu. However, when her health got worse, she was likewise rapidly losing weight. Even doctors could not identify the cause of her illness.
With all these trials, it was easy for anyone to lose control of the situation. However, Bryan Falchuk saw it as the perfect opportunity for motivation. He recalls waking up one day, feeling a sense of purpose. That internal purpose consequently led him to focus finding a cure for his sick wife.
Furthermore, it was an added challenge for Bryan Falchuk. It indeed was not easy to juggle the household and medical expenses since Bryan Falchuk was the sole breadwinner of the family.
Bryan Falchuk’s wife eventually was diagnosed to have Lyme disease. Refusing to resort to conventional medicine, his wife found the solution to her health issues through acupuncture.
This whole life experience ultimately taught Bryan Falchuk the advantages of being consistent with the motivation to achieve goals. Giving credit to his wife, Bryan Falchuk says his wife helped him find his life purpose even when she was sick.
“You can’t fix anything if you’re broken. And you can’t be there for anyone else ultimately if you’re so not there for yourself,” said Bryan Falchuk.
It is so easy to set goals. However, the real challenge is the motivation to achieve those goals. A significant factor in getting real motivation is the determination to endure the obstacles along the way. Bryan Falchuk advises people to stop using the word ‘but,’ because everything is possible.
Bryan Falchuk also cautions against using material things as motivation. It looks enticing at first, but ultimately, the drive to succeed will be fleeting. For one to be able to find real motivation, you consequently have to be aware of finding a more profound connection within yourself.
“Set specific goals. It’s all about a sense of self. It’s not just about being healthy. You still have to take action,” said Bryan Falchuk. “If you don’t have a self-love approach, you’re not allowing the possibility that you’re okay or that you deserve success.”
I can so relate to what Bryan Falchuk is saying. Before I started this podcast, there were a lot of things that went through my mind. I felt overwhelmed just thinking about how am I going to get known health personalities on my show.

Eczema is a common skin condition that affects millions of people regardless of age. It usually is mistaken as a rash. To those who are seeking a natural remedy for eczema, this is the perfect episode for you! My guest, Denise Henry dealt with eczema at a very young age, and she gave excellent tips for healing.
Denise Henry’s journey dealing with eczema started when she was barely a newborn. However, medical doctors then couldn’t pinpoint the real cause of her condition.
Then when Denise Henry was three months old, she was diagnosed with an ear infection and was prescribed amoxicillin as her medication. However, it turns out she was also adversely reacting to animals and dairy. That was devastating since Denise Henry loved to pet animals.
People often mix up eczema and psoriasis. Eczema is a skin condition which is triggered by a hypersensitivity reaction. Some factors that trigger the condition include textile fabrics, animals, and chemicals.
Eczema is known to be common in infants, and some outgrow the skin condition when they become adults. Symptoms of the skin include factors like being reddish, inflamed, peeling, blistered, cracked or pus-filled. However, it is not covered with scaly dead skin, unlike psoriasis.
As for psoriasis, it can appear anywhere on the body. People who suffer from this experience intense itching. Compared to eczema, psoriasis is harder to treat.
Having to deal with eczema all her life, Denise Henry was given steroid creams by dermatologists as a medication. Although the creams break down the skin, it does the job by relieving the itch.
As years flew by, Denise Henry recalls that the turning point in her life was when she traveled to Southeast Asia for self-healing. She volunteered at a small resort near Kuala Lumpur for a month. Life was good. However, her eczema started flaring up badly during that time.
It turns out that the pool water had fecal coliform bacteria. Apparently, the water from the limestone pools was pumped into showers and drinking water in the resort. Hence, aggravating Denise Henry’s sensitive skin condition.
After barely recovering from that bout of skin irritation, Denise Henry then flew to Bali for a festival. This time, her skin was again inflamed due to the papaya she ate. It again triggered her eczema so when she recovered from the irritation and flew back to Malaysia; she started practicing meditation when she settled in Langkawi.
Fast-forward to a trip in Argentina, Denise Henry met a dermatologist who happened to prescribe a different brand of steroid cream. It was initially efficient but it was not able to completely get rid of her eczema.
Denise Henry once and for all decided to get to the bottom of her skin condition when she went back to the United States,. From the steroid cream that she was given by the dermatologist in Argentina, she researched all the ingredients and found natural solutions for each of them.
From there, Denise Henry started making her creams while regularly teaching and meditating. As her body developed a sense of calmness, Denise Henry realized that she stopped itching!
Apparently, Denise Henry discovered that eczema could be treated naturally. That is why she created a framework of mindfulness, environment, symptoms, and solutions. Aptly called as M.E.S.S., Denise Henry put together simple steps to live a pain-free life.
“Be aware. You can heal. Changing that mindset is so powerful, and care is the key,” said Denise Henry. “Medication and going out in nature absorbs bioenergy. Working out is also part of the care.”
Denise Henry says that a significant factor in healing from eczema is consuming the right foods. She recommends collagen-enhancing foods like bone brother and a lot of non-GMO and grass-fed options. Other food choices include:
Denise Henry also advises staying away from processed foods and any dish containing chemicals that your body doesn’t know how to digest properly.
To those who would like to know more about healing yourself naturally, I suggest grabbing a copy of Denise Henry’s book. The book is an excellent resource for natural remedies, making the right food choices and how textiles can affect eczema.
Essentially, Denise Henry recommends looking for a plant or vegetable-dyed textiles like bamboo, flax linen or hemp. According to Denise Henry, bamboo, in particular, is sustainable and good for the environment. Plus, they are also non-reactive for the skin, unlike synthetic fibers.
“Bamboo sheets are soft. They do a finer thread count and are coated just lightly in a little bit of natural wax from the plants. That deters the dust mites, so there is no mold growth,” said Denise Henry.
Denise Henry’s skincare line is a work in progress. She is continuously expanding her list of products and takes pride in sharing that her ingredients are all natural.
“All my ingredients are anti-inflammatory and anti-reactive. My products range from natural butter, sunflower seed oil, avocado oil, lavender, beeswax, soy wax, and sandalwood,” said Denise Henry.
Denise Henry has countless stories of clients who have successfully healed naturally. One client was even able to do away with bipolar medication!
The solution, however, is not at all complicated. Denise Henry says that one must start with simple steps. A good place to start is changing the way you eat and tracking your food intake.
By tracking your food intake, you would be able to identify what food you are reacting to. It can also determine what part of your body responds to a particular food. In most cases, Denise Henry says it is usually stress-related.
“Mindfulness is the base of any healing. Believe that you can heal and that you can heal. I just want people to realize that they can heal themselves. And they can also heal the people around them,” said Denise Henry.
Denise Henry got her Fine Arts for Fashion Design Bachelor’s degree from the International Academy of Design & Technology. She earned her Master’s degree in Environmental Sustainability from Green Mountain College.
She is passionate about creating beauty and healing without harming the planet. After receiving her BA, Denise Henry realized that she cared less about what people were wearing and more about what fashion was doing to our environment.
Naturally, Denise Henry’s Master’s Thesis focused on eliminating waste in the retail apparel industry. Not only from the textile development side of it but, also within the transportation and marketing departments.
Denise Henry’s main criticism is that even with Global Reporting Standards like the GRI and the HIGG Index, companies are not required to present the entirety of their data from all levels of production and logistics and on to the sales floor.

Chicken Soup For The Soul book has been around for a long time. There have been hundreds of published volumes with stories that speak of wisdom, inspiration, and positivity. But did you know that a lot of work goes behind making an edition Chicken Soup For The Soul? Today we’re blessed to have the book’s publisher Amy Newmark who will reveal all that!
Amy Newmark narrates that like most of us, she grew up reading Chicken Soup For The Soul and it deeply touched her life. So when the opportunity came to buy the publishing company, she welcomed the chance with open arms.
“I can’t take credit for the early books since we bought the company from the founders in 2008. But I carried on the same legacy by putting 101 stories from real regular people in every book,” said Amy Newmark.
Although the management changed hands, the format remains the same. According to Amy Newmark, the job entails hard work since she has to work seven days a week and 14 hours a day. However, reading thousands of inspiring stories helps her reduce stress.
I know many of you are wondering why we’re talking about a book in a health podcast. Like I have stressed in past episodes, overall health goes beyond the physical aspect. True health essentially covers emotional, spiritual and mental elements as well.
“I don’t think you can be healthy if you haven’t reduced your stress levels. If you haven’t found a way to make your life productive and purposeful, it can affect health,” affirms Amy Newmark.
Amy Newmark reveals that it was insanity when she and her partners bought the company during the most profound recession period in 2008. The situation was worse in the publishing industry.
However, Amy Newmark decided to take the plunge because she came from the technology side of business and content. And technology is delivering content. So when she saw this content company available, she had no second thoughts of taking over.
“Chicken Soup For The Soul stood for what we believed in. We could take the company beyond the bookshelf,” said Amy Newmark. “It is about storytelling that improves peoples lives. And storytelling is not confined to the written page anymore.”
To reach out to more people, they send out daily emails with free stories. And they have leveled up in the technology scene as well! The Chicken Soup For The Soul Random Acts Of Kindness book was launched in February 2017. According to Amy Newmark, it proved to be such a huge bestseller that they kept having to do emergency reprints.
“The book contains 101 stories of acts of kindness from strangers. It revives hope in humanity and shows you that almost everybody is a good person,” Amy Newmark said.
She also says that people inherently want to be good. They want to look out for each other, and they want to take care of each other.
“People feel good when they do something good for someone else. There’s a natural human impulse to do good things for other people. It’s like a physiological, emotional need that we have,” said Amy Newmark. “The cool thing about the book is that it tells people they are allowed to do those things.”
This edition of Chicken Soup For The Soul, on the other hand, is primarily a crash course for Chicken Soup For The Soul advice and wisdom. Amy Newmark says that the stories in the book inspire people to find their happiness and help them step out of their comfort zone.
Much as the team behind Chicken Soup For The Soul work long hours, Amy Newmark claims that the company treats their staff quite well. They are equally wonderful to their writers as well.
“I think we pay the highest amount to our writers and freelancers. We don’t take their copyright because we let them maintain ownership of their story. Primarily, we just get the right to publish it in our book.,” said Amy Newmark.
However, it’s not easy to have your work published in the book. According to Amy Newmark, they have a team of editors who proofread every story. Nevertheless, the majority of those whose submitted works didn’t get published are still thankful for the chance to be able to write their story.

Clean protein spells a big difference for one to reach optimal health. Contrary to belief, just because we eat a sufficient amount of protein, doesn’t mean that it’s healthy. To help us understand more about what clean protein is, my guest, Bruce Friedrich, will educate us on why quality and not quantity should matter.
Bruce Friedrich is a staunch advocate of producing meat that is devoid of chemicals and unethical practices. His mission is to educate people and companies the importance of creating the right environment to sustain plant-based and clean meat for consumers.
“I’ve been working against industrial farming. Because I saw what happened to companies who are creating better, healthier, more sustainable products that people want to consume,” said Bruce Friedrich.
The Good Food Institute was established by Bruce Friedrich to develop definitive steps towards producing clean food that is healthy to eat and delicious. Ultimately, these little steps also significantly help prevent the destruction of our planet as far as environmental issues are concerned.
“Pretty much everyone makes their food purchasing decisions with considerations about taste, price, and convenience,” Bruce Friedrich said. “Hence, we can transform agriculture away from the industrial use of animals by creating products that people want to buy. That’s the purpose of The Good Food Institute.”
Now, what is clean protein? It’s hard to find food that is considered clean protein. Most food products are laden with chemicals, pesticides, and heavy metals. These can be found in commercial meat, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy products.
According to Bruce Friedrich, if we’re not picky about the quality of the food we eat, there will be negative consequences health-wise. So how do we make sure it’s clean protein?
For starters, buy food from a reputable source, especially meats. One solution that The Good Food Institute came up with was to grow meat from a small cell sample. This way, there is no need to slaughter animals.
Clean meat is still considered real meat. However, it is safer to consume because it has no chemicals or residue from bacteria. And because of the way it was made, harmful greenhouse gas emissions from factories can also be avoided. Hence, a significant advantage to our environment.
According to Bruce Friedrich, food scientists are likewise looking into the same procedure to produce healthy and high-quality plant-based foods. Plants are being sourced to create plant-based meats, eggs, and dairy products. In fact, some companies in the U.S. and Europe are already producing clean meat products using this concept.
The book is co-authored with Kathy Freston. Bruce Friedrich says the Clean Protein Book is an excellent resource for whoever wants to learn everything there is to know about clean protein.
According to Bruce Friedrich, the Clean Protein book is an inspiration from a book he read 30 years ago, called the Diet For A Small Planet. The book also includes the lessons he learned ever since he practiced a plant-based diet since he was 18 years old.
“Kathy and I were both investigating the science of nutrition for decades. Plant-based is cleaner protein. People get sick from eating contaminated meat. They get hospitalized and die,” said Bruce Friedrich.
According to Bruce Friedrich, many Americans are prone to sickness and obesity. Apparently, most of the diseases they suffer from are dietary diseases. Hence, it is essential that we make changes in what we eat before it’s too late.
“Vegetarian and vegan diets are healthy for every stage of life from infancy to very old age. The diet makes people less prone to heart disease and stroke,” explains Bruce Friedrich.
Health authorities have been more aggressive over the years promoting a meatless diet. In fact, Bruce Friedrich says there’s a program called Meatless Mondays which is supported by several schools of public health.
Meatless Mondays mostly encourage people to shift away from animal products consumption one day a week. Under the program, people should eat the meat size of a deck of cards. And according to Bruce Friedrich, the more you eat legumes, nuts, and whole grains as a protein source, the healthier you’re going to be.
“One of the things that The Good Food is working on, is finding a way to deliver high-quality protein in the form of plant-based meat that people want to consume,” said Bruce Friedrich. “For people who want to eat real meat, eating cultured meat is an option that is so much better for the environment and cleaner product.”
Bruce Friedrich says we can get our daily dose of B-12 from the environment. And since B-12 is created from bacteria, Bruce Friedrich says that the most convenient option would be to take a B-12 supplement.
Furthermore, Bruce Friedrich says that among people who are entirely plant-based, the rate of those with iron-deficiency anemia is not higher than it is in the general population. However, people who are on a plant-based diet are suffering from much lower rate of the diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
“The more whole plant-based food you eat, the healthier you will be. Furthermore, 97% of Americans are not taking in enough fiber,” Bruce Friedrich explains.
He adds, “Women should take at least 25 grams of fiber a day, while men must take 38 grams of fiber. The average person’s intake is 15 grams. Therefore, we must make it a point to get enough protein and fiber because it lowers the rate of diseases.”
Bruce Friedrich graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown Law and Phi Beta Kappa from Grinnell College. He also holds degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the London School of Economics.
Bruce Friedrich is a popular speaker on college campuses and has delivered presentations on food innovation at most of the nation’s top universities, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and MIT. He has co-authored two books, including the forthcoming Clean Protein: The Revolution That Will Reshape Your Body, Boost Your Energy—and Save Our Planet with New York Times bestselling author Kathy Freston, contributed chapters to five books, and authored seven law review articles.

Health goals are usually on top of most people’s lists as their new year’s resolution. However, how many of us follow through and achieve our health goals by the end of the year? It’s only been a few days after the holidays, and we’re so lucky to have Adam Schaeuble back on the show! Read on to check out his excellent tips on how we can become the best version of ourselves this year.
For those who have heard about Adam Schaeuble for the first time, you’d be surprised how huge he was during his younger years. He weighed 185 lbs. when he graduated from high school. Consistently gaining 20 to 30 pounds in college, he weighed a whopping 327 lbs. after graduation!
But because Adam Schaeuble felt unhealthy, he wanted a change. It was not long before he did lose over a hundred pounds! In fact, Adam Schaeuble was so motivated achieving his health goals; it eventually inspired other people in his town to follow his example. Now is the goal is to help people all over the world to lose weight.
“There was no quick fix and no hacks. The key to successful health goals is to remain consistent in your efforts,” said Adam Schaeuble.
Good news! Adam Schaeuble has developed a 14-day course, which is a daily workout challenge. The 10-minute video is unique because it has his clients leading the exercise.
“People are going to get a lot of insight and make sure that it sticks. Because it’s New Year’s Resolution time right now, people are fired up to get going and ignite that transformation. That’s why I call it the starter course,” Adam Schaeuble explained.
However, Adam Schaeuble cautions everyone to be realistic about their health goals. He said his workout challenge is not going to solve everything. However, he promises that this video will get people started on their health goals and lay the foundation for what could happen.
Adam Schaeuble began his podcast to fulfill his goal of reaching many people all over the world and get them motivated to start their health goals. It’s honestly a fantastic source of information on how you can start and maintain realistic health goals.
“I try to paint a picture so that people can visualize the process and see where they are at. Then I put together a process called the transformation timeline,” Adam Schaeuble said.
Let’s face it. Getting on the health bandwagon is not an easy task. It takes a tremendous amount of willpower mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally to achieve our health goals. While most people can be motivated to start fulfilling their health goals, the real test is whether they have the right mindset to go through the process.
“The basic question is whether you are going to be coachable. What I’m looking to assess is the balance in their lifestyle and health. Are you willing to give up control? Are you willing to learn something new?,” said Adam Schaeuble.
Essentially, what Adam Schaeuble is trying to point out, is that will you be willing to let someone else tell you how to do the process. That is why he asks people to switch their focus toward health for a specified period and let go of that lifestyle.
Ideally, Adam Schaeuble recommends clients to stay on his transformation program for six months. This gives ample time for people to focus on their goal and the why behind the goal.
Furthermore, Adam Schaeuble says we need to simplify things and focus on the fundamentals. Questions to ponder in gauging your self-assessment include the following:
“That’s where we start to see results towards our transformation. Stop the negative momentum and focus moving forward. And also get a good support system,” advises Adam Schaeuble.
By developing the lifestyle rehabilitation statement, Adam Schaeuble mapped out what he wanted to achieve, set health goals and a deadline. If you recall, it wasn’t also easy for Adam Schaeuble.
“I realized I could learn so much from my clients just by taking some time,” said Adam Schaeuble. “I started a group at my online academy. I sit in and listen, and work through it. It gives me so many ideas to create just by sitting and listening to other people.”
Ultimately, Adam Schaeuble encourages people to seek all avenues where they can soak knowledge. A more significant challenge is also learning to let go of one major limiting belief.
If you have that little voice, Adam Schaeuble says we have to motivate ourselves to go through the goal-setting process. Remind yourself of your health goals and feel the passion behind those goals by assuring ourselves that we are worth it.
“Look at the entire year and set goals for 3 to 5 different areas for the year. Divide it into quarterly amounts. There will be ups and downs but don’t give up,” encourages Adam Schaeuble. “Go through the process. The key is never to stop moving. Tell yourself that this is the year that everything changes.”
Adam Schaeuble is a former Ph.D. (Pretty Heavy Dude). He once weighed 327 pounds, and after losing 100 pounds himself, he opened up a gym in his hometown of Bloomington, IN. Adam Schaeuble took what he learned from his 100-pound weight loss experience and applied it to his hometown clients. In a five year period, his hometown clients lost over 35,000 lbs.!
Now Adam Schaeuble is on his One Million Pound Mission. He is taking all of his successful programs and strategies that he has used for his transformation and his hometown clients, and he’s putting them online with the hopes of producing a one million pound impact across the globe.
Adam Schaeuble has a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Indiana University and has the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification from the NSCA. At his company, TransformationCoach.Me, he holds the positions of Head Coach and Lead Transformologist.
He is also the host of The TransformationCoach.Me podcast where he dives into his best transformation tips and strategies, and he interviews people that have had amazing transformation results to extract their best tips and motivation for the audience.
