JJ Virgin is coming out with her new book, The Miracle Mindset on February 21st. What led her to create this book was during the time when she was in the middle of her very first book, The Virgin Diet.   It was a couple of weeks out before the book was getting published and her PBS TV show was getting ready to launch.

Grant's Accident

She went all in for the book because she knew it could help a lot of people. One night in 2012, after a long day of taping videos, her 16-year-old son Grant, who has a bipolar disorder, had a bad day and threw a tantrum because they did not allow him to go to a martial arts class that night.

As Grant stomped out of the house barefoot and got hit by a car crossing the street. It was actually a hit and run. A neighbor came around to protect him but the estimate was the female driver was going 40 miles an hour. They airlifted Grant to the hospital and he was barely alive.

Initial Diagnosis

"They had a tube in his brain to relieve pressure, and they had him on a ventilator. He literally had a bone sticking out of his leg. The doctor said he had a torn aorta and that kills 90% of the people right on the scene," recalls JJ Virgin.

Virgin says the aorta was hanging on by an onion skin.  It had to be repaired.  But the challenge was, Grant had three brain bleeds. He had multiple skull fractures and he was in a deep coma. But he still had brain activity which was the key thing.

The Decision

The surgery that he needed was very specialized.  Very few doctors do it. His attending physician then said Grant needed to be airlifted but because of his condition, the doctor said her son would never survive it. And even if he did, the doctor was doubtful if he would survive the surgery. He would be so brain-damaged, it wouldn't be worth it.

"My other son Bryce, who's 15, was listening and asked the doctor---'So like a .25% chance he'll make it?' And the doctor affirmed it. Then Bryce said, 'We'll take those odds,'" said JJ Virgin.

The doctor was so upset with them, seeing that they were going to overrule him. And I bluntly told the doctor my son was going to die if we don't take the chance.

Receiving Treatment At UCLA

"Eventually, Grant was airlifted to the UCLA trauma center while the rest of us drove there. A doctor there came up to me before Grant's surgery and assured me everything will be fine," said JJ Virgin.

After his surgery, Grant was in a deep coma we met up with the neurosurgeons. The only thing I could touch was his hand. Everything else was covered with gauze, casts and all sorts of stuff.

Communicating With Grant

JJ Virgin tried talking to Grant, "I looked at him and I said something but no response. Then I said his brother Bryce loves him very much. And he squeezed my hand. So at that point, I knew he was in there."

After testing Grant by rattling off names that she knew he wouldn't respond to, she tried to dig deeper by giving him a little pep talk. His recovery was bleak at that point but from that time on, JJ Virgin didn't allow anyone to say anything negative about him.

"When he got well, Grant said to me that when he was in the ICU in a coma, the gray man asked me if I wanted to live or die. He said he talked to his grandfather and it was really nice 'over there'. He said he really did not want to live but he kept hearing my voice and thinking about family so he decided to stay," said JJ Virgin.

Key Brain Nutrients That Helped Grant's Recovery:

JJ's Gameplan

These were what Virgin did to make sure she was in tip top shape throughout Grant's recovery. She said made sure to do the following apart from maintaining a daily gratitude journal:

  1. Put yourself first. You develop the habits now because they create a structure that gives you total freedom.
  2. Eat right. Have healthy food within reach.
  3. Exercise whenever you can.
  4. Get 8 hours of sleep.
  5. Take supplements.

The Right Mindset

Later on, she realized it all came down to our mindset. No one can take you farther than you believe you should go. We don't grow when things are easy.  We grow when we're challenged.

What an amazing story, right? When we do not want to be a statistic, we have to go against the status quo. During the times we decide we're not good enough, we're not going to seek out anything that goes against that belief. I'm glad this story has a happy ending because Grant has 110% fully recovered four years later.

In addition to that, Virgin also says as the brain starts to wake up and starts to remember things, the memories we remember first are the bad ones. It turns out that's what your brain does to protect you.

"I believe you get what you expect. If every day you realize that when you lean in to fear, it's eventually not too scary anymore because our comfort zone expands," said Virgin. "It all comes down to knowing you deserve it. You're here to do big things and not here to play it safe. Reach more people, do bigger things, help more people."

"Why Are We Treated Better At Starbucks Than We Are At Our Doctor's Office?"

Joshua Rosenthal MScED is the founder and director of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, an online higher education school where students are trained as Health Coaches and receive the holistic nutrition education and business skills to go out into the world and make a contribution to the health and happiness of everyone.

Founded by Rosenthal in 1992, the Institute for Integrative Nutrition has grown from a small classroom of passionate individuals to a global community of over 100,000 students and graduates in more than 120 countries worldwide.

His revolutionary approach introduces a wide variety of dietary theories – from Eastern to Western, ancient to modern and everything in between. He identified that the food on your plate is secondary to healthy relationships, regular physical activity, a fulfilling career, and a spiritual practice – all of which can fill your soul and satisfy your hunger for life.

Joshua is a highly sensitive healer with a Masters of Science degree in education and 30 years in the fields of whole foods, personal coaching, and teaching.

How I Started

Six months ago, I interviewed a graduate of IIN. I never heard of the institution before then. But he impressed me so much that I looked into the school after our interview.  Consequently, I called the school and enrolled right away.

I've been involved in their program for about six months now. I highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in joining the Holistic Health field. It is also exciting for anyone who simply wants their own health back.

I want to turn this ripple into a tidal wave. Let's help as many people as possible. Help others gain their health back naturally.

For listeners who don't know, I started the podcast about a year ago and have had such an amazing response. We stayed #1 in iTunes under the Health section. I've interviewed some Health Coaches and I really didn't know anything about Health Coaching. However, I do know a lot about Naturopathic Medicine because that is my passion and Holistic Medicine as well.

Getting To Know Joshua Rosenthal

It's really scary that what Joshua Rosenthal wrote on his website that only 3% of our health care dollars are spent on prevention disease. It's madness what's going on.

"I started like anyone. Going to school and wondering what's going on in the world. They were teaching us one thing in class. But then outside of classes a whole different world," said Joshua Rosenthal. "I knew there had to be something more."

Then in college, Joshua Rosenthal studied Psychology and he was still searching. Eventually, he got a Master's Degree and he said one of his professors mentioned something about the food changes everything. And you have to ask patients what they eat.

"I thought, how crazy is that? To have all these education and no one ever talked about food," said Joshua Rosenthal.

So he started using his food background but emphasizing the food part. And creating much faster results for people than spending years in therapy.

He also went to India 10 times. Because he was really curious what the ancient cultures said about wisdom. Then another time, he was living at a yoga center in the United States.  There, he was interested in the connection between yoga and Ayurveda, and Tantra among others. Hence, that affected him deeply.

Bio-Individuality And Primary Food

"It's really a matter of taking your health into your own hands and finding what works for you. That's what I call 'Bio-Individuality'. One person's food is another person's poison," he says.

Rosenthal also says being skinny doesn't mean you're healthy and it doesn't mean you're happy. There are some people who eat perfectly but they're not happy. What feeds you isn't just food. The things that make us happy is actually loving relationship. In addition to that, it feeds our heart and soul. That's what Rosenthal describes as our 'Primary Food'.

I truly agree with that. When we find joy in what we do, it becomes our Primary Food. Food becomes secondary. When we are unhappy, it leads us to disease and food will not counteract that level of stress.

Starting The Institute For Integrated Nutrition

Joshua Rosenthal was actually in Toronto when he started it in 1992. He was trying to bring in some teachers for occasional classes.

One day when he was in New York, he realized he could express his thoughts better if he did it himself.  Starting from a small basement in Broadway, his student body grew over time when he offered more Health Coaching classes and cooking classes.

First of all, What is unique is that IIN is university-affiliated and they have famous personalities as the mentors. Students can use their credits towards a Bachelor's Degree or a Master's Degree.

Institute for Intergrative Nutrition is the largest health coaching program in the world. They currently have around 100,000 students and graduates in over 120 countries worldwide.

It took 20 years but he finds joy knowing he has helped and is still helping people lead a holistic life. Furthermore, he is also proud that there are numerous famous students in IIN who went on to become famous personalities.

I love college.  I went to the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy.  My first career was massage therapy. I loved everything I learned but IIN has a unique learning process for you to actually integrate what you learn.

Clients Of An IIN Graduate

Most of the students are women. Joshua Rosenthal loves giving women the opportunity to be at home with their kids.  It allows them to earn more money per hour and help people with their health.

So the classes include learning how to market themselves through social media. The are also modules on how to write a book.

Working With A Health Coach

He describes it like having a personal trainer. Like a personal trainer, a Health Coach makes sure you get most out of the time you spend.  They teach you how not to injure yourself.

He says these are basically the things a Health Coach would ask:

  1. What are you doing with for health?
  2. What are the three things you're doing that you shouldn't be doing?
  3. What are your main health concerns?
  4. How long has it been that way?
  5. How much longer do you want it to stay that way?
  6. How long do you want to tolerate this?
  7. Would you be open to moving this to a greater priority?

Health Coaches do not treat diseases.  Rosenthal says there is only one disease --- Human Imbalance. And Health Coaches try to fix that. Typically, working with a Health Coach is a 6 months program. It's a tried and true process.

I love that we initially thought that we're setting out to become a Health Coach at IIN. And then we realize we become part of the mission to change the world. If we can create this ripple effect, we could have that tipping point that enough of us can help people.

Steps On How To Be Happy

  1. Close eyes and take a deep breath. Realize that in this moment everything is perfectly wonderful.
  2. Make sure your body is hydrated because cravings are based on dehydration.
  3. Take off the computer and connect more to people on a more personal level.
  4. Follow your heart.
  5. Follow your dream. Go for it.

Emotional Eating VS. Mindful Eating

Lisa's personal struggle with emotional eating started when she left her home and headed off to college. The absence of a family to watch her eating habits led to uncontrollable eating and quick weight gain. Lisa had gone on and off in trying different crazy food diets, and up and down in keeping the same weight.

Lisa went through the same unhealthy cycle again when she moved to New York. She went back to yo-yo dieting which made her gain weight even more. Razi Berry: Matters of the Heart

Happy Valentine's Day! Whether you love Valentine's Day or not, I just want to start by saying I love all of you, my listeners. Words cannot express how happy I am to be here with another guest that I love, Razi Berry, my soul sister.

Journal of Naturopathic Doctor News & Review

Razi is actually a bigger fan of Naturopathic Medicine than I am. Razi Berry founded the Journal of Naturopathic Doctor News & Review. When I heard about that, I went to Dr. Megan Saunders who most of you know because of my past interview with her. Dr. Saunders apparently has heard of the Journal and affirmed it as a very well-respected Naturopathic Journal.

Razi Berry says only Naturopaths are allowed to contribute to the Journal. I'll be providing the link to the journal below this blog post. She also realized that a lot of people reading it are also laymen, not doctors like you and me who want to learn more about Naturopaths. Because of this, she created another website (link is below this blogpost) with articles about Naturopathic Medicine.

And because it is Valentine's Day, we're going to talk about the events that you are going to be signing up for. Heart Failure at 14 Years Old

"For many of us it's a journey. My journey started when I was 14 years old. I was dying in the hospital with heart failure. It was due to a complication of an eating disorder," shares Razi Berry.

Razi Jerry further narrates, the culture was different back then.  She remembers the hospital staff had a disdain for my case. They made it sound like it was my fault. Hence, I had a feeling of shame.

"It was so bad that my family brought in a Catholic priest to administer the last rites. Shortly after that, my mom brought in my then 4-year-old brother to say goodbye. I remember my out of body experience and the feeling of suddenly surrounded by the feeling of overwhelming love," recalls Razi.

She said that although the experience was hard to describe in detail, she instantly healed. Eventually, Razi Berry left the hospital on zero medications.

"I did become much more sensitive to that intuitive center of our heart. From such a young age I came to understand this concept that we call 'mind, body, medicine'. That our heart, mind, spiritual self and body really aren't separate," Berry said.

From then on, Razi Berry grew up constantly searching for that experience again. Hence, she got really immersed in religion. That was just one piece of her healing journey.

Razi's Diagnosis

"In my mid-20s, I was a real estate agent and making good money. An then I crashed and burned. No doctor could offer any help. I even went to the Mayo Clinic," said Berry.

Later on, Razi Berry eventually found out she had Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue. But she refused to take some of the medicines for her illness because it was so strong.

A psychiatrist was then referred to her who said her illness was just in her mind. Another one told her she should just go on disability.  That terrified Berry.

Finding A Naturopathic Doctor

After that, she went to a Naturopathic Doctor but it was the turning point. Berry said that doctor really took time to know everything she felt. She also said felt her doctor was really putting pieces together on what was happening to her body.

"She thought of testing me for solvents. I also went through detoxification and elimination diet and eventually got better," said Berry.

When I lost my parents, I felt my heart was breaking in two. My father in particular, died of heart failure. I almost was hospitalized because of the grief. It's amazing how an emotional event can stimulate this cascade of physical response to events.

A Baby Is Born

"Then I got married but I had 5 miscarriages in 6 years. We couldn't figure out what was wrong. I refused conventional methods to conceive. So to keep my mind on something else, I thought of coming out with the Journal of Naturopathic Doctor News & Review," said Berry.

Shortly after that, she resolved to quit her old job and focus on building up her Journal.  That's when Berry finally became pregnant. Twenty months later, she was pregnant with her second daughter.

I also love that Razi Berry even chose to homeschool her two daughters. I have a 22-month-old son but we don't do daycare. My husband and I basically juggle our son. We really do take our time to teach him at his level.

"It just works better when you work from home. That way, I can work and then juggle it with homeschooling the kids. I don't think it's for everyone," Berry said.

Shedding the Old Belief

We have to shed the old belief system. Stop seeing the world in black and white. I'm not saying vaccines are bad. Rather I encourage people to see the facts surrounding Naturopathic Medicine.

The Natural Path is a beautiful resource of Naturopathic Doctors. They share ways to heal and ways to prevent different diseases using principles of Naturopathic Medicine.

The Heart Revolution

"My journey began with my heart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death of men and women," said Berry.

I can so relate to Berry's passion. I was 22 years old when I lost my mom and 28 years old when I lost my dad.

My mom died in her 50's and my dad died in his early 60's. He died of a broken heart. I use that as my fuel to do what I do because I want to help people save their parents and themselves, too.

Research shows that the heart transmits information to the whole body and to our brains. So when we say somebody dies of grief, broken heart or loneliness, we're not being poetic. And that is the reason for The Heart Revolution.

Berry said, "There's more to heart disease than fats, oil, cholesterol and pumping blood to your body. We have doctors in The Heart Revolution who can educate you on heart disease."

"If we just learn to take care of our bodies, connect with nature and really live inside our bodies, feel our emotions, that's where healings really happen," adds Berry.

Emotional Freedom Technique And Its Benefits  http://learntruehealth.com/emotional-freedom-technique

Emotional Freedom Technique includes acupressure in addition to elements of cognitive and exposure therapy. Seventy-two genes were significantly regulated.

Emotional Freedom Techniques Research 

I'm so excited to have award-winning author Dawson Church today to discuss the link between emotions and genetics. Emotional Freedom Techniques for posttraumatic stress disorder or PTSD are two studies Church conducted. They demonstrated highly significant results despite a small sample size, indicating a robust treatment effect.

Scientific Research Regarding the Benefits of EFT, Epigenetics, Gene Expression and More

Church says that there is a new science breakthrough. There is gene shifting expressing in new ways when we meditate or release emotions. We can see the body healing after we do these practices.

"When we experience a bad thing and we're 25 years old, we have coping abilities. At 2 or 4 years old, traumas are laid out in the brain as ideas and experiences," Church explains. "They're laid down neurologically as wiring in parts of the brain that has to do with memory and learning."

What exactly is Emotional Freedom Techniques?

Church says Emotional Freedom Techniques is a combination of some very old and well-studied psychotherapy techniques. EFT is a powerful self-help method based on research showing that emotional trauma contributes greatly to disease.

EFT tapping can reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress. Once the distress is reduced or removed, the body can often rebalance itself, and accelerate healing.

"EFT uses elements of Cognitive Therapy and Exposure Therapy. Combined with Acupressure, it taps on 12 acupuncture points," explains Church. "Research has proved that EFT is effective for phobias, anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, pain, and other problems."

Proven Results

I'm so moved with the results of Church's treatment. I hear these stories and testimonials of healing and I can't help but cry tears of joy. It's so amazing.

"When we test people six months later or a year later, we find that all the psychological stress is gone. And Emotional Freedom Techniques breaks the associations," says Church.

I love the fact that we can take our health into our own hands. And that we can heal wounds from the past. What I love about EFT is that it is being able to utilize the body to let it go. Because we store negative emotions in the body.

Bias About Emotional Freedom Techniques

Personally, I had a bias against EFT. Because I'm a health nut, I'm very into everything holistic. I started to believe it only when I had a friend who came back from EFT training.

My friend asked me if I was upset with anyone and I did admit I felt anger towards someone for two years. I received treatment from my friend and shortly after, I felt the entire thing shift. It felt like a Novocane had taken over. I felt a numbness where the anger used to be. Eventually, I stopped thinking about that person altogether.

Needless to say, my whole perception of EFT changed after my personal experience.

The Genie in Your Genes

Another intriguing fact is Church's claim that genes express differently.  There are so many components in gene expression and Church expounds on that in his book, The Genie in your Genes.

Church says, " Your genes respond to your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. The way you use your mind shapes your brain, turning genes on and off in ways that can dramatically affect your health and well-being."

The book also reveals the exciting applications of the new science of Epigenetics to healing. Citing hundreds of scientific studies, Church shows how you can apply these discoveries in your own life.

He explains how electromagnetic energy flows in your body and affects your cells. Church shows how your hormonal, neurological, connective tissue, and neurotransmitter systems all work in harmony to conduct a coordinated flow of information throughout your body.

Furthermore, he says as you take conscious control of the process, you produce a positive effect on your health, becoming an "epigenetic engineer" of your own wellbeing. 

EFT Manual

This is another book that Church wrote.  A chunk of the book is devoted to testimonials of people who have benefitted from EFT.

Church says this manual is based on Clinical EFT, the only version of EFT to be validated in dozens of scientific studies. Step by step, you will learn the "evidence-based" form of EFT used in those studies.

This book shows you how to use Clinical EFT fo a variety of common conditions, including pain, fears, addictions and cravings, weight issues, insomnia, and guilt. With the healing keys of EFT, you'll be surprised at how many problems that hold you back can be quickly and easily relieved, opening up new possibilities for your life.

EFT On Children with Emotional Issues 

Church has a cute story to share. This is about a mother from Brazil who has a 6-year-old autistic son. Apparently, she tried various treatments.  She learned about EFT and tried it on her son.

Eventually, all the symptoms seemingly went away.  When they moved to a new city, they went to a new doctor thinking her son was still autistic.

Lo and behold, she got a big surprise. That doctor shooed her away, apparently declaring that her son was not autistic. Hence, was baffled as to why they came to him in the first place. 

Veterans Stress Project 

Church is likewise involved in the Veterans Stress Project. Under the project, rehabilitation efforts are administered to veterans suffering from PTSD. They offer returning vets free or low-cost sessions using Energy Psychology.

What Church is doing is truly inspiring. I'm excited to see how far his journey will go and how many more people can benefit from his work.

What Are The Health Risks of Gluten? http://learntruehealth.com/food-allergy-symptoms

For most of her life, Ginger Hudock has suffered from food allergy symptoms without even knowing it. She continued eating standard American diet - meat, fat, sugar and dairy, processed and refined foods. Ginger was totally clueless about proper nutrition!

In 2007, Ginger started getting sick with headaches and intestinal pains chronically for one entire year! So, she went back and forth to see her physician for a few times, but only prescribed nothing other than drugs to masked the symptoms. Not until one doctor finally advised her to try eliminating gluten and dairy products from her food intake. Surprisingly, after a few days, Ginger was 80% better! Then,  after running serious of tests and reactivities for food allergy, it was found out that Ginger was indeed gluten intolerant.

"Almost ten years ago, I began having daily headaches and abdominal pains. Finally, after crying my eyes out more than once, I eliminating wheat to see if that made a difference. Bingo! I was severely allergic to gluten products. Since then I have discovered additional food sensitivities and allergies. When my friends and acquaintances learn about this, the most common response is "I could never give up bread!". That would most likely have been my response as well, before starting this ten-year journey. However, I have been shown many blessings as a result of this "hardship" including my new career helping others." --Ginger Hudock
