Sherry is a food philosopher, author, chef, and nutritionist. In Australia Sherry was the Victorian Chair of Nutrition Australia, Melbourne President of Slow Food, Co-Founder of the World Wellness Project, and a TEDxTokyo presenter.
Sherry was once twice her size. She practices what she teaches and has obtained amazing health.
As founder of the Return to Food Academy, she trains people to become Food Coaches and through her 7 Day Challenge, she helps individuals gain health through learning new ways of eating that are satisfying and healthy. Take Sherry's 7 Day Food Challenge: http://learntruehealth.com/challenge/
Sherry's passion is training food coaches to make a living helping people develop a healthy relationship with food, their body and the planet using the philosophies and strategies that she has developed over the last +30 years.
Sherry teaches two lessons from her book during our interview:
1. Nature's Principle - Nutrition that is most present in our life is what we need the most of. Air and water are the most primary life dependent nutrient. Vegetation (vegetables) are the third. Easier to obtain nuts, seeds and berries are next. Fruit and then animal protein is last. In the wild, we would rather find and cook an egg or a fish than kill, bleed, gut and skin or pluck a chicken or lamb.
If we had to live in nature we would eat much differently. If we think of the hierarchy of how we would eat if we depended on nature we would eat more of the foods that are easy to obtain and less of the foods that are harder to obtain.
2. The Lethal Recipe - How we are producing our food has to lead to a huge rise in "lifestyle" diseases. These diseases are directly from how we eat. Many foods in our grocery store are as processed as heroin or cocaine. It's artificial, chemical, toxic and void of nutrition.
These foods are refined grains, sugars, oils, salts and chemicals. Also, dairy and soy products are often manipulated until they are unhealthy.
Through the process of making these packaged foods, they denature the nutrition, remove minerals and add addictive chemicals.
Here’s What You’ll Discover:
Why diets don't work
Dangers of the cult of thin & fit
The Power of Eating Together
The most vital nutrient deficiency facing mankind
The relationship between food addiction and connection
How does Nature tell us what to eat?
What is the Consumption Concept and how does that philosophy relate to real life?
Health AH-HA Moment:
There are just as many skinny people who develop diabetes as obese people. Obesity doesn't cause diabetes, it's the foods we are eating. Processed foods are highly addictive. Sugar lights up the brain 8x more than cocaine does.
Your Challenge:
1 - Take Sherry's 7 Day Food Challenge:
http://learntruehealth.com/challenge/
2 - Start looking at your food and ask yourself "Was this produced out of love or fear?" "Am I making this choice because I am loving my body or because I am afraid?"
Was the food manufactured or grown out of love? Think of the chain of custody from seed to your plate. The farmer, grocer, the company that made it and the person that cooked it. Finally, create an environment where you eat surrounded by those who love each other.

Brendan Ridings graduated from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale with a Bachelor’s of Science focusing on Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
While attaining his degree, Brendan won the 2007 WABDL World powerlifting championships, the 2008 and 2009 WABDL National Colligate Championships, and currently holds the IL bench press record and deadlift record in 2 weight classes.
Brendan went on to attain his Corrective Exercise Specialty from The National Academy of Sports Medicine. Brendan teaches people how to easily reverse chronic pain and correct their posture using simple biomechanics, exercise and a back support device he invented.
Poor posture has a stronger correlation to lowered life expectancy than smoking. The majority of osteoarthritis and chronic pain conditions are actually chronic poor posture and bad movement patterns resulting from these postures. Brendan provides simple, actionable steps to feel better, look better, and prevent pain.
Brendan Ridings shares that poor postural mechanics resulting from the 9+ hours spent sitting has even distorted breathing patterns. We have adopted chest breathing which is shallow and rapid, this signals the body to release cortisol and adrenaline, which creates stressful feelings and chemistry.
Here’s What You’ll Discover:
A lengthened muscle from slouching becomes weakened.
Reciprocal inhibition is when the nervous system shuts down around elongated muscle from slouching making it harder for us to activate good muscle patterns and posture!
Brendan teaches exercises we can all do to help reverse bad posture.
Bad posture leads to chronic pain and can wear down joints unevenly.
Health AH-HA Moment:
Poor posture leads to increased stress hormone levels and decreased testosterone! Likewise, 4 minutes in a "power posture" decrease stress hormones and increase testosterone!
Your Challenge:
Do these three exercises below:
1. Exercise:
Good Neuro Muscular Activity:
Hands outstretched to sides, turn palms to the ceiling. This activates the between the shoulder blades that are normally over stretched muscles from slouching.
2. Exercise:
Lay on floor on back
Squeeze butt so hips come off floor a little
Squeeze abs 20% and bring the bottom of rib care a little closer to the pelvis.
This is a neutral spine that helps reactivate your core.
3. Exercise:
To lower stress levels and the stress hormone:
Sit down
Pull shoulder blades back
pull your head back into a neutral position
Place hands on your thighs with palms facing down.
Take a couple of deep breaths, slightly deeper than normal, through the nose and out of the mouth.
Turn palms up to face the ceiling.
Sit up straight and pull your shoulder blades back, now focus on drawing the air into your belly or diaphragm.
Take another couple of deep breaths, slightly deeper than normal, through the nose and out of the mouth.
Notice it's easier to breath when your palms face upwards.
You will see after 1 minute, you already have a more relaxed feeling in your body. Diaphragm breathing helps to relax the body, improve oxygenation, and even stimulate serotonin. Since stress is linked to almost all medical conditions, this is something you can do daily, or when feeling stressed to counteract the harsh effects of chronic stress.
Do this daily for 2 minutes to relax. Use it before bed and when at the office.

Dr. Heidi describes the anatomy of the lungs. At the base of the lungs, down by our belly, is where there is the most amount of blood pulled for O2 exchanged. When we do not breathe correctly, our body cannot get the right amount of O2.
Oxygen is how we digest! If you are not getting enough O2 your body cannot do anything else optimally. Literally optimal health cannot be achieved if we are not breathing correctly. And most of us are NOT breathing correctly!
The immune system is within our sinuses and throat to aid us in fighting off germs that want to enter our lungs. Our nasal passages moisten and warm the air which protects the lungs.
It's best to breath in through the nose.
When we flex our diaphragm, we are pushing the organs in our belly down and out. By breathing deeply we are also increasing our digestion and healthy movement of our intestines.
Proper Full Deep Breath
Step One: Breath in through the nose
Step Two: Breathe into the belly, feel the belly push outwards and diaphragm flex downwards.
Step three: Feel the sides of your ribs expand
Step Four: Firm up your belly and complete your inhale by filling the upper part of the lungs by the collar bones.
Deep breath on an 8 count.
Walking breathing meditation.
Breathe in fully for 8 seconds. Hold for 8 seconds. Exhale for 8 seconds.
Every time you are at a stop light, practices this deep breathing technique.
Take a couple of full deep 8 count breaths before you begin to eat. This will aid in digestion.
Alternate Nostril Breathing. Right finger over left nostril, inhale. Switch to left finger over right nostril. Exhale. Switch and repeat for 10. Then switch sides.
The nervous system controls breathing and breathing controls NS. The vagus nerve runs down the chest. Stimulating the vasovagal nerve lowers heart rate and blood pressure. We can intentionally stimulate that nerve to lower blood pressure and calm the body.
Rib stretching:
Deep breath with hands on sides of ribs.
hold breath and gently squeeze ribs downward.
Exhale.
The Cleansing Breath
Deep full inhale
Purse lips without poofing cheeks out
Blow multiple times like you are trying to blow candles out until your lungs are empty.
Take a full deep breath
This forces the lungs to get out all stale air, cleanses the lungs.
Here’s What You’ll Discover:
When we breath we are eliminating metabolic waste!
Why do we yawn?
Why are we told to breath into a paper bag when we have a panic attack?
Deep breath increases energy!
We lose water when we breathe so drink more water when doing breathing exercises!
Proper deep breathing increases immune health by pumping lymph!
Health AH-HA Moment:
Deep breathing decreases pain and increases mood!
Your Challenge:
Integrate the different breaths that Dr. Heidi teaches into your daily life. You will notice more energy!

Today's episode is about how our spiritual, mental and emotional health directly affects our physical health. Through an attitude of gratitude today's guest, author, speaker and executive coach, Angus Nelson, shares how we can transform our lives to have more happiness, connection and a stronger sense of purpose and belonging.
In the western world, we are taught to focus on goals to achieve. We beat ourselves up for not having the body, the car, the house, the job, relationship or the income we want. Those who find themselves dissatisfied with an aspect of their life end up achieving nothing more than unhealthy levels of stress and inner conflict.
In today's podcast interview, Angus teaches how to shift our mindset so we can increase our happiness and become grateful for what we have in the now. This gratitude is just the beginning. It opens our life up to feeling levels of joy, purpose, and inner satisfaction that we have been yearning for.
Gratitude fosters generosity within ourselves and for ourselves. It opens us up to seeking new opportunities that we were too afraid to take.
Angus shares the 3 greatest needs we have in our life.
The need to be unconditionally loved
The need to feel that you are valued, have worth and have purpose
The need to know you are not alone
Angus shares stories and insights around how he has shifted his life from being a victim of his life to generating and owning his life. His life focus is to teach others how to gain the control and happiness that he has achieved through his personal growth journey.

Dr. Heidi Semanie is back on the show to teach us things we didn't know about vitamin D!
It's common knowledge that vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin because our body uses the sunshine to make it. And in the winter, we can suffer from Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder (S.A.D.), or low vitamin D levels, which are linked to depression.
Dr. Heidi explains that our body needs Vitamin D to utilize Calcium, a major mineral our bones, muscles, nerves and other tissues need to function! So, without vitamin D, we cannot healthfully use calcium!
Vitamin D is also linked to aiding the body in cancer prevention, and in the event the body is fighting cancer, it has been linked to helping the body create healthy tissue.
Lower Vitamin D levels are found in those with neurological disorders like MS and Parkinson's as well as in mood disorders like depression.
Here’s What You’ll Discover:
What key roll our liver and kidneys play in our vitamin D levels
Why digestive health is so important in establishing vitamin D levels
How much vitamin D you should supplement with
How much sun exposure do you need to help your body make vitamin D
What vitamin D rich foods you should eat
What foods you should avoid!
Health AH-HA Moment:
Cholesterol is the raw building block of vitamin D! Without eating, digesting and absorbing healthy fats we cannot make vitamin D!
Your Challenge:
Follow Dr. Heidi's advice for diet, supplementation and getting healthy sun exposure each week to keep your vitamin D levels optimal all year long.

Forrest Knutson, an expert in Yogic Meditation, is back on the show to teach us all HOW to meditate. He gives us a simple step-by-step method to begin meditating each day, and for those who have been meditating for a while, he covers techniques to go deeper.
This particular type of meditation can be a spiritual experience, in that you are encouraged to utilize your spiritual beliefs within your meditation. Christians can incorporate Jesus, Catholics can incorporate Mother Mary or one of their favorite saints. Others may choose Buddha, an angel, Allah or the Divine Light. Whoever you have a personal connection with.
Forrest explains how to incorporate your spirituality into your meditation for an inspiring and profound experience.
If you do not have a defined spirituality, do not worry, you can still use meditation for its many benefits!
Here is a summary of Forrest's step-by-step guide:
1) Quiet Room or corner of your room.
2) Sit on the floor or sit with your back straight on a chair.
3) Straight spine with one vertebra under the other.
4) Place a pillow under your sacrum to tilt your pelvis slightly forward when sitting. This will aid your back in aligning itself.
5) If you can, sit in a half or full lotus position. This is sitting with your legs crossed.
6) Sit on a wool, fur or silk blanket.
7) Pitch dark room.
8) It is nice to prepare an altar with an image of your spiritual ideal. Jesus, Buddha or perhaps the divine light, etc... someone you connect with personally who inspires you, who you want to connect with, this is your goal.
9) Sway a little side to side and back and forth to align your spine.
10) Double breath - Listen to episode #25 for Forrest's detailed explanation of the double breath.
11) Watch your breath.
12) Hong-Sau Breath.
13) Gently lift eyes to look at your spiritual eye (between and slightly above eyebrows).
14) Feel and watch frontal sinus inflate while breathing.
15) Start doing this for a few minutes at a time each day and build up your endurance.
Please share this episode with those who you know would love to learn how to meditate and receive all of the emotional, mental, physical and spiritual benefits that daily meditation has to offer.

Jennifer Saltzman is back on the show to chat with Ashley about nutrition and supplement confusion. For over 21 years Jen has helped many people find their path to health through the physical medicine of pilates, the healing power of prayer and the nutrifying addition of healthy diet and supplements.
Her biggest concern is that people have supplement confusion. Many people believe that supplementing with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs and omega fatty acids is a good thing. The problem is what to take, how much to take and when to take it!
Jen offers herself as a Supplement Coach to those who are seeking to finally relieve the confusion and get on the right supplements for them. To reach Jennifer, please email her: Jennifer@takeyoursupplements.com
Here’s What You’ll Discover:
Eliminate degenerative diseases
Prolong life and good health
Increase your sense of vitality, energy and stamina
Achieve deeper, more restful sleep
Health AH-HA Moment:
The modern era of convenience, fast food, and reactive medicine has eliminated preventive medicine and full nutrition from our lives. We must teach ourselves how to implement holistic activities, like earthing, taking supplements and eating organic foods, to prevent disease and maintain optimal health.
Your Challenge:
Jennifer challenges listeners to take action. If you want better health, do something and reach out for help. Jennifer says to pay attention to the number of seemingly healthy and young people that are getting diseases that were once only had by the elderly. Degenerative diseases are from lack of the raw building blocks the body needs to keep itself together. Pay attention to your own symptoms. Stop believing you have these symptoms because it's genetic or normal for your age or gender. True health is living symptom-free. Nutrition, both from food and supplements, play a major role in aiding your body in its overall health.

Oleg of Green Bloom For Humanity is Ashley’s guest today on The Learn True Health Podcast. Oleg is an expert in the healing properties of cannabis, and his business, Green Bloom For Humanity, is leading the industry in developing RAW, non-psychoactive cannabinoids. “Don’t get high, get healthy” is Green Bloom’s motto.
Oleg helps Ashley and his audience understand the significance of cannabis. The lay person thinks that marijuana is just trouble, causing highs that lead to addiction and run-ins with the law. However, consumed in raw form, it is not just a medicine, it is also a supplement.
Cannabis can supplement 40 types of food groups and all vitamins, enhancing their curative capacities. Cannabis has been used for its profound therapeutic value for centuries. As a matter of fact he found cannabis mentioned 66 times in the Old Testament. With his cannabis protocol he has helped a final stage cancer patient attain full remission after having been released from the hospital to die.
Oleg goes deep into the differences between cannabis grown indoors with chemicals and artificial light and cannabis grown organically in the sun. Negative reactions from the former are caused by the plants not having been washed, by fungus, mildew, pesticides, and spider mites.
Pure RAW cannabis has unlimited medicinal value with no side effects. Oleg describes the four different cannabis delivery methods, and emphasizes that anxiety and pain can be eliminated quickly and completely, while those who can’t sleep will now sleep through the night. Oleg accepts Ashley’s invitation to participate again in a future show.

7. Diet:
These tips are what I have gathered from several top holistic
doctors. When you need to boost your immune system:
Avoid sugar, including grains, fruit and juice.
Eat organic
Increase healthy protein, like eggs, free-range chicken, beef and
broth.
Eat more leafy green veggies
Avoid processed food. If it comes in a package and has ingredients
you don't recognise as organic, don't eat it.
Or put another way, if it is a plant, eat it. If it comes from a
(manufacturing) plant...Don't eat it.
Immune Boosting Activities:
Cold Wet Socks:
1. Drench your cotton socks in cold water or yarrow tea then stick
them in the freezer.
2. Take a very hot bath or shower for 20 minutes. Feel free to add
the Youngevity essential oil blends I mentioned above in your bath.
Ten drops should work.
3. Take the now frozen wet socks and put them on your toasty warm
feet and cover the wet cotton socks with dry wool socks.
4. Keep both pairs of socks on and go to bed.
When you wake up your feet will be warm and you’ll feel a lot
better than you did the night before.
5. Repeat the wet sock treatment for three nights in a row for best
results.
Neti Pot (Nasal Irrigation):
Follow instructions that come with your Neti Pot.
Essential Oil Steam Inhaler:
1. Boil water
2. Remove from heat and pour the water into a large bowl.
3. Add 2 drops of Olbas essential oil.
4. Cover your head and the bowl with a large bath towel
5. Place your face above the bowl and far enough away so the steam
doesn't burn you.
6. Inhale the hot steam for 3 minutes.
7. Add another 2 or 3 drops and repeat until the water has cooled
down.
8. Repeat several times a day. Follow up with a neti pot, blowing
your nose and then colloidal silver nasal spray.

Steve Flansbaum is back on the show! Steve is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, NASM Certified Personal Trainer and has earned his MS in Professional Counseling and Theory.
Steve offers a workshop called "Thinking Your Way Into a Thinner Body" so if you would like to attend his workshop for free, or work with him one-on-one, please contact him by visiting: http://www.steveflansbaum.com/new-page/
In this podcast, Steve shares how our body image and our relationship with our body can easily be distorted by our mind. We think this is just a problem women have but men are just as prone to body dysmorphia. Looking in the mirror and obsessing over a flaw that isn’t there. Men want to be taller with more muscles and as Steve points out, he gained 100lbs of muscle body building and when he looked in the mirror his mind could not let him see his accomplishment, only his believe that it wasn’t enough.
It will never be enough until you heal the relationship with yourself.
Steve shares that the relationship to our behavior needs to change. The language we use, the identity we form, around our problem is a good place to start. You will stay, “This is my arm. I have an arm.” But when it comes to fat we say “I am fat”. It has become that person’s identity. If it’s their belief system they will always hold onto that problem and beat themselves up over that problem when they look in the mirror no matter how much weight they lose.
If you change your relationship to the problem in order to solve the problem.
Our habits are our continuous behaviors that result in our health. If we want to make permanent health changes we need to start from within so we can affect our environment and our habits to align with our health goals.
Steve shares that this isn’t about beating yourself up or killing ourselves at the gym. Having understanding, compassion and love for yourself is one of his first steps.
If we would look at how we treat ourselves like how two people treat each other we would realize that we are in an abusive relationship with ourselves!
Here’s What You’ll Discover:
Health AH-HA Moment:
Exercise choice where we have it. Knowing where you do have a choice and avoiding environments where you know you will give into what you do not want to give into. This is one way you can nurture yourself and build trust with yourself again.
Said another way, if you had a close friend who was a recovering alcoholic you wouldn’t ask them to go to the liquor store with you, so why do you walk down the aisle at the grocery store that contains the foods you want to avoid and then beat yourself up when you put them in your cart. Or if you are trying to quit smoking, pay for your gas outside so you don’t give yourself the opportunity to be confronted at the cash register by the cigarettes for sale.
Take a step back and find where you do have willpower. If you don’t go down the aisle you won’t force yourself into that situation. Treat yourself with the same love and respect you would treat a friend.
Your Challenge:
Check out Steve’s website and give him a call. He can do Skype consultations and help you shift your internal and external environment to be in alignment with your health goals.

It’s shocking to her that nationwide the C-section rate in the United States is almost 40%. It’s ridiculous to look at a room with 10 pregnant women and believe that 4 of them need a C-section.
Because our medical system is a for profit system we cannot always trust that our doctor or hospital has our best interests at heart. That is one of the many reasons why having a midwife and doula when going through your pregnancy, will help you have the best outcome possible.
The United States, a country that is #1 out of 175 countries on spending the most amount of money on healthcare ranks 38th out of 175 countries for infant mortality! There is something wrong here.
Statistically, working with a midwife and doula will decrease your chances of needing other medical interventions like C-section or pain management, like an epidural. Epidurals increase the chance of needing a C-section and C-sections increase the chance of both mother and baby experiencing life-threatening complications and death.
April shares that when a woman feels supported during her birth she is statistically less likely to need or want medical interventions, thus one of the ways these holistic health practitioners help to decrease infant mortality.
Here’s What You’ll Discover:
• How to have a positive birth experience
• What is a doula
• What is a midwife
• How women can decrease their chances of having a C-section by creating a supportive team around her and her partner.
• What is going on in the mainstream medical system that isn’t working around giving birth and what we can learn from midwives to decrease needing medical interventions like C-section and epidurals.
Health AH-HA Moment:
Start interviewing and pick your midwife before becoming pregnant. Your midwife will get to know you and help you navigate your whole pregnancy and birth.

The definition of erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve or to maintain an erection 25% to 100% of the time.
Common known causes can range from blood sugar dysregulation, kidney issues, healthy cholesterol deficiency, circulatory issues, prostate health, and stress.
Dr. Megan shares that if the ED came on suddenly to see a doctor so they can rule out nerve damage, cancer or something more serious.

• Erectile Dysfunction means there is an issue causing it that can be reversed with natural medicine and lifestyle changes.
• Stress can cause erectile dysfunction!
• Emotional issues like conflict at home or work can be a contributing factor to impotence.
• What foods and supplements can help!
• The many root causes that can lead to impotence and what a man can do to get their sexual health and performance back.
Health AH-HA Moment:
A man’s sexual performance is an indicator of their overall emotional and physical health. Through lifestyle changes and addressing the root cause of the problem, men can reverse the problem and get their sexual performance back!
Your Challenge:
Eat 12 eggs a day, raw or runny yolks to get that healthy cholesterol that is the building blocks of your hormones.
Seek a Naturopathic Doctor to check your blood work and do a physical exam to help determine the root cause of your erectile dysfunction.
Blood sugar issues often lead to erectile dysfunction so cut out sugar and processed food from your diet.
Visit TakeYourSupplements.com to get on supplements that will support your whole body to perform optimally at the cellular level. There are known herbs and supplements that support blood sugar regulation, circulatory strength, and prostate performance.

In this interview, Steve shares his deep insights around what is not working in the $60 billion dollars a year weight loss industry and what he is doing that is effectively helping his clients get to the root cause of their weight issues.
In the weight loss industry, Steve shares, there are $60 billion dollars being spent each year and yet only a 3% to 5% success rate! Steve has a 20% success rate with his clients but for those who stick with the program he has a 100% success rate. It’s all about sticking with it.
I asked Steve what the difference was between those who stick with it and successfully achieve their weight goals and those who drop off and do not. The difference is humility. It’s willingness to see there is a problem, to face it and ask for help and support.
Steve agrees that nutrition, diet, and exercise play a big role in achieving a healthy weight however it is our mindset, our beliefs, the lifestyle we have created for ourselves and the environment we have chosen to live in that steer our habits.
Weight is a result of a symptom. The symptom is the habits. The habits associated with diet, nutrition and exercise have to do with how our life is set up, meaning our internal and external environment.
Our internal environment is made up of our beliefs about ourselves and our life, our mindset and emotions.
My habits are a direct response to my environment. To change habits, change the environment so I am not automatically responding in that way.

Check out Steve’s website and give him a call. He can do Skype consultations and help you shift your internal and external environment to be in alignment with your health goals.

Patti Davis is back on the show to discuss life skills that can be learned from seeing a licensed mental health counselor. She uses adventure therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical family systems, Gestalt and play therapy with people of all ages to help them overcome issues such as grief, low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, depression and more. Patti is an expert in emotional health and the mind-body connection.
In Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Patti is able to help her clients learn valuable life skills like learning how to ask for what you want, mindfulness and bearing pain skillfully. Mindfulness, in particular, is a valuable life skill because it helps us focus in the moment on the task at hand.
Anxiety comes from living in the future and depression comes from living in the past, Patti shares. Mindfulness helps us live in the present moment, thus avoiding those negative emotions.
Overall Patti has observed that the life skills her clients learn have led to them thriving emotionally, mentally and physically. Patti believes that everyone can benefit from having a good counselor on their side.
You can use counseling to learn and implement new life skills, become better professionally, improve relationships, communication and have a neutral, unbiased, sounding board for when you need someone to objectively listen to your problems.
Here’s What You’ll Discover:
Health AH-HA Moment:
Watch your language. Come from “I”. Instead of “She did this to me” or “You made me feel…” Say “I felt upset when you…”
Instead of “but” say “and”. But means you negate one thought for the other. And means you can be both things. “A parent can be gentle and firm.”
Your Challenge:
Every morning and night think of 10 things for which you are grateful. You cannot be stuck in negative emotions when you are in gratitude.

Your Challenge:
1) Get movement into each and every day! Walk, gym, hike or bike to work, no excuses to get your body moving.
